Advice on ski vises

I have a set of traditional vises and I'd like to upgrade to a ski vise.  Checking out the archives, I found differences of opinion, and I wonder what you might recommend. I ski primarily in the Northeast so I have skis with relatively narrow waists. I'd be waxing about three or four pairs per week.

I am have in mind one of the following:

  • Swiss World Cup Vise 50 mm / Jaws 85 mm   $129 from Artech Ski
  • SkiMan Ski Vise Pro                                      $130 from Skidreamer
  • Toko Ski Vise World Cup                                $135 from Slidewright or
  • Jaws of the Beast                                           $99.95 form Race Place

What do you think?

Thanks.

Tom

I have the above for the l;ast 3 years!

Excellent.  I alos have 2 Jaws of beast that I no longer use. I like the ability to hold the ski tight whne up on edge working on the side edges of the Super Jaw Swix.

I believe the Ski Man, Swix, and Toko's are all failrly much the same, just marketed under diffferent names with different paint jobs.

I would go the x-tra $20 and get the Bigger jaws wthat also accomodate wider waisted skis!  If you use any really wide skis you may have to go to the super wide (will accomodate 120mm ski) versions.

What Atomicman said.  I have a Holmenkol vice that looks exactly like the Swix in the photo.  It is a great vice that pops on and off the workbench easily and accomodates different types of skis.

I have the SVST pro vice at my house.  It isnt cheap, but it will be the one and only vice you will ever need to buy.

I have used the Toko and SkiMan and are both great vises I prefer for ski work, but limit options with fat skis and snowboards. TestPilot makes the BMS (Base Maintenance System) which is a very simple design yet very effective for skis, boards, waxings, repairs, binding mounts, etc.
