Event report: Diabolical Double 2011

Okay, most of this report will appear on my blog (link here).

Suffice it to say, though, it's still a brutally hard day in the saddle: 125 miles; 16,000 feet of climbing in mostly steep, unforgiving forms; pavement good, bad, and non-existent; and a lot of supportive fellow riders and event volunteers.

I didn't take any pictures this year, as I was enjoying the ride too much to stop. Yup: I enjoyed the sufferfest, strange as that may seem. At any rate, read the recap for yourself.

A great read and a great ride, congrats!

What gearing did you use?

Thanks!

My gearing was a compact double up front (50/34) with a 12-27 cassette. Compared to 2010's 50/36 compact paired with an 11-25 cassette, this was a better choice.

I know some people who wee running even lower setups. A friend of mine swapped out his 11-28 for a Shimano XT long-cage rear mech and an 11-32 mountain cassette, which worked well for him. However, there were also some people who were riding 11-23 cassettes with standard 53/39 cranks, and they suffered a great deal: tacking up the steeper climbs or, in the worst case, walking them.

Can't, as it occurs every year on freshman orientation weekend at the university - an "all hands on deck" weekend for my department.

Alas - that ride always holds interest for me!
