Could someone please provide some info on conditions at Barriloche and Las Lenas for a possible ski trip in mid July?

Neither resort seems to be open yet. Is this normal?

The last pic above is downtown Baraloche cleaning up ash that blew in from from the volcano in Chile. If you are going to S.A. this year make sure you get some good info on what is really going on. Rumors are that the volcano is expected to keep spewing ash for another couple months possibly screwing up the entire ski season, or at least plane travel.

Check the 2011 South America thread on TGR for some first hand info.

The northen resorts like Valle Nevado, La Parva, Portillo and Las Lenas are open but with limited terrain available. They got around 3ft of snow so far this season so they need a couple more storms in order to open higher terrain.

Nevados de Chillan in Chile, currently has the best snow conditions in South America and has some good terrain already open.

Bariloche and Chapelco are still closed due to lack of snow. Although there is a big storm in the forecast, freezing level is always an issue down there... Also, I heard the Airport in Bariloche is still closed. Check their website: http://www.aa2000.com.ar/aeropuertos.aspx#

In Ushuaia, cerro castor has already opened some good terrain, but the base is not very deep... just like everywhere else...

Unfortunately snow conditions in South America in July, are not like western North America in January... frown.gif
