USC Football 'Vacates' Nat'l Championship Win

Now, how do I get a Sooners 2005 National Champions Shirt and Hat?  Oh lookie there, I already have them.  Something tells me they just went way up in value!

The brand new jersey was pretty cheap on eBay a couple years ago. Found the hat at Goodwill for fifty cents, still had the tags on it too.  I suspect the folks that parted with these so easily after Oklahoma lost that game to USC would really like to have them back eh?

As a Cal alumni I take some issue with that... as the only loss our football team had that year was a very close game against USC.  Technically you're right, but I think Cal (with Aaron Rodgers at the time) could have won the same bowl game.

Haha!  Aaron Rodgers took quite some time to finally get some well deserved props.  Oklahoma didn't play well in that game, but who cares since USC just got DQ'droflmao.gif

My dad went to USC.  I did my grad work in the U Texas program so I got to rub it in when they lost to Texas the following year.  My teams have plenty of championships and will likely get many more.  The sun doesn't shine on Cal very often..

Are you sure we're talking about the same season? Auburn was also undefeated.  OU should be 2005 National Champs for the 2004 Season.  Remember, USC lost to Texas the year after this so what's the Cal beef again??

TW Team W-L
1 USC 12-0
2 Oklahoma 12-0
3 Auburn 12-0
4 Texas 10-1
5 California 10-1
6 Utah 11-0
7 Georgia 9-2
8 Virginia Tech 10-2
9 Boise State 11-0
10 Louisville 10-1
11 LSU 9-2
12 Iowa 9-2
13 Michigan 9-2
14 Miami (Fla.) 8-3
15 Tennessee 9-3
16 Florida State 8-3

I'm not really concerned about this... but like I said, Cal's only loss was to a USC team that had their wins vacated... so they were undefeated.  Anyway, the whole practice of vacating wins is kind of dumb... I say mark them with an asterisk or something.  Or do nothing, since college football has become a bit of a joke anyway, sadly.

Agree that it is all pointless at this point.  The only fair way I see to change the rankings would be to remove all the USC data from the BCS system for that season then rerun the calculations and see where everyone ends up if the USC games never happened.

Actually, Cal lost their bowl game to Texas Tech, a team Oklahoma easily defeated the same season.  Utah and Auburn also finished without a blemish but like you say, the rankings and bowl match ups would have been slightly different had USC been dq'd mid season rather than 7 years after the fact.

Even the OU coach agrees that it isn't worth making a stink over. th_dunno-1[1].gif

Oklahoma doesn't want vacated title

I changed the title of the thread from Oklahoma to NO ONE!  hahaha

As sweet as it is seeing the University of Spoiled Children have their title vacated, I was sitting in the Orange Bowl that night watching our Sooners get their royal butts kicked and even I wouldn't give us the title.  Auburn deserves it.

Cal basically didn't show up for that game after feeling like they got screwed by the BCS... not a good way to back up your assertions of being a good team, but that is what happened.

PFFTrolleyes.gif  Auburn barely beat a Virginia Tech team that already had two losses that season.  Utah stomped Pitt but that doesn't prove anything either. Yes, the Sooners laid a HUGE TURD.   Seems like the BCS decision to just take the money back from USC and keep it is probably correct unless they wanted to go to the trouble of expunging all the USC game data from the BCS 2004 tool and running the calculations again to see who ends up where if USC never played anyone that year.  Where would Oklahoma, Cal, Utah, and Auburn be ranked if nobody in the country played USA at all.  That would change the strength of schedule ratings for almost every team somewhat because even if a team didn't play USC they may have played someone else that did,.  Only fair way I see to do anything else but what currently stands.
