Whistler in May

I'm heading up to Whistler for the Victoria Day weekend (May 21, 22, 23) for some spring skiing. I'm not familiar with the resort and would appreciate any advice or helpful hints for the adventurous intermediate skier. I will be skiing Blackcomb only as Whistler Mountain is now closed for the season. Thanks!

It's actually still snowing a little here and there in the alpine, it's been a crazy crazy season with insane amounts of snow haha.

I'd recommend going up to the 7th Heaven chairlift. You can check out all the runs under 7th Heaven or at the top of 7th Heaven you can drop behind it into Blackcomb Glacier which leads to all the area underneath the Glacier Express chairlift.

Oh and check out Crystal Hut for a nice rest stop, it's right next to you as you get off the Crystal Chair lift. They have amazing waffles.

Will the whole mountain be open at that point or will they be losing some of the snow-cover by then?

I was there this past Monday, May 9th and we could still ski down all the way.  Tons of snow still and 15 cm last night I hear.  Even if the bottom of the mountain were closed by then, there's still lots of terrain up high, no worries there.

7th Heaven looks great. I downloaded a pdf of the Whistler/ Blackcomb trail map on to my computer.

I'm going to study the runs a bit before I hit the slopes. Don't want to waste valuable ski time standing around trying to figure out where I am, or where I have ended up. I also have new set of Atomics to break in. Oh, yeah. Getting pumped for Whistler!

Have a rag handy to wipe up the drool while looking at the map.  Stay up high, like 7th Heaven, and you won't go wrong.  Have fun.

Sorry Crystal Hut closed for the season (it is quite late after all).

Thanks, I already have the link to the Whistler site in my favourites. I have been using it to check the conditions on Blackcomb every day this week. It's looking like Sunday will be the best day this coming weekend, however the forecast has changed several times since Monday, so anything can happen. Looks fairly warm on Blackcomb today. I'm really having a tough concentrating at work!

Don't forget to take pictures and post a TR!

Finally reporting on our trip to Whistler in May. I skied only one day, May 22. It was raining as I made my way up Blackcomb Mountain on the gondola. The first bit of bad news was that 7th Heaven, which I was looking forward to, was closed. Unloading at the top of the Jersey Cream Express chairlift, I felt as if I had been transported to the set of a disaster movie entitled "The Land of Fog & Slush". Ghostly figures darted past me through the grey gloom as I made my way cautiously down the run. Taking refuge from the fog in the Glacier Lodge, I found the place filled with long-faced skiers huddled silently over coffee cups and bowls of soup. I wasn't the only one not having fun. Frustrated by the pea-soup fog on Jersey Cream, I headed further down the mountain to a run called Zig Zag. The fog cleared somewhat, so I could see where I was going, but the overhanging blanket of low cloud stayed put. I managed to get in some good turns on Zig Zag. The only sunshine that day was bestowed upon Whistler's golf courses, visible down in valley. "Hmm, maybe I should take up golf" I thought to myself, as I struggled through the slush. I finished up the day on Zig Zag, which on a good day would be an awesome run. Looking forward to heading back next season to explore more of Blackcomb. Only 6 1/2 months to go - bring it on!

Ah man thats sucks, at least you got a turn in though.  Just get yourself ready for next season.  It is a fantastic resort with loads going on.
