Racing Pole Length

Thread Starter

I need to snag some poles for GS, SG and DH.  My current poles are 45" measured from the top of the grip to the basket.  When using the method of flipping the pole upside down and grabbing it under the basket, my arm is not quite parallel to the floor-poles are a tad short.

What lengths do I need?  Is a DH pole used in SG?

Thanks

Eric

Bend is different but for what you are doing (whatever that is) .. what the heck, give a few places a call.

The Race Place (Jay ME), a real nice guy with good deals and so were the people at Reliable Racing.  They don't mind spending a few minutes with you.

You want to size up probably 2-3 sizes from your current pole.  You want to be skiing a slightly longer pole for speed events vs SL.  You can buy GS SG and DH poles if you want, or just use SG poles for all 3.

DH and SG poles are used for poling out of the start and balance so length should be based on what you can manage while skating and the fit of the pole to your body. Look for the slight bend just below the grip for a more comfortable tuck (this makes the poles left and right, btw). I like the Leki pole. Komperdel has a nice bend as well. A 52 or 54 inch pole would be a good length. Even a 56 inch pole if it fit your body in a tuck would be good.

GS poles are sized somewhere between SL and speed poles. The arm parallel to the ground test you tried would size the pole correctly.

Thank you for the help Yuki, RaceDude and MastersRacer,

I picked up some Scott DH poles on ebay and ScotsSkier has some GS poles that will work.

I would suggest ARTECHSKI for a place to buy.. No one ever would spend more time and devote more attention than them, ask for Holly..... They are real family bussiness...

As far as price and service no one would beat ARTECHSKI..... They are real family bussiness...

Sizewise  you got  it from guys above... Seems like 52 would be right for you, unless you are very strong..... Then you could use longer poles.....

I went in to the shop (Artech) a couple times for stuff this year. Very nice folks. They were even tolerant of my elderly parents saying things like," Whaaaatt? Forty dollars for some wax.... WHAAAT?!?!"

A little extreme for non-paying spectators but they mean to have their say.

Thread-jack complete?

Oliver
