And, in my case, bodily damage as well.  I managed to core shot my new skis (yeah, I know, what was I thinking - I was thinking I wanted to try my new skis, obviously), triggering a fall that bounced my left hip off a nice hunk of granite.  Looks like the damage is limited to contusions and bruises, so with any luck, I should be back in the saddle by the weekend.

To the Risk-Taking Crew:  My apologies for being unable to take you to the end of the journey, but I had a blast, and it seemed like y'all did too.  Enjoy the rest of the week, even if some of it involves suffering through groomers with Dookey et al. wink.gif

Oh man I am really sorry to hear that. mustve' hurt a ton. I have had more falls trying to save my skis, not that you did it that way, but it's tough when your ski hits that hard, every time. damn. sorry. get well fast.

Hey TheDad, it was wonderful to meet you and IMO your guiding was top notch.  So sorry you day was cut just a bit short by that nasty granite but no worries, Spence was a superstar guide for the last few runs of the day.  We skied knee deep on what ever run that is skier right of Keyhole.  Hope to ski with you again soonicon14.gif

That was Lower Saddle reached by about a 15 minute hike above Alpine Bowl Chair (aka The High Traverse). We also cut across High Yellow Gully and most of us skied lower Our Father.

Still looking for someone staying at Grand Sierra Resort Reno through Tuesday to store a couple of bags and a box tomorrow, Call room 1025 if you can help.

Great making turns with you too, and good to hear that Dookey picked up the mantle.

Skier's right of Keyhole... assuming that you mean that you hiked over the Keyhole and dropped down into the saddle bowl, that's the Lower Saddle.  Knee deep?  Wish I'd been there.

With a guide like The Dad and an incredibly skilled group following, the wonders of Alpine were revealed. I don't think I could have gotten a better tour. Top it off with the entertainment of Dookey stuck in the stream! However, my skis may never recover.

Great day, fun new friends and great memories that will last forever. Thanks to everyone there and involved.

Eric

Yes, it was the Saddle.  Lower?  It didn't seem too lower to me but this was my first day at AM.  It was legitimately knee deep, at least to a couple of our group who are slight in stature =)  To the rest of us it was just great skiing =D

TheDad, sorry about your injury, heal well!   Trivial question- what were the core-shotted skis?  I saw you sold the Wailers, I wonder what replaced them...

Hey Bump F, I skied skiers left of Keyhole, also deep! Keyhole itself is all rocks & can't be open,

Took me years to get nerve to ski Keyhole (on previous trip)

Then I went to Gentilian gully off Scott chair. No tracks & powder w/ no rocks the entire 1500 vertical down.

not even crossover tracks. It was legally open !

My best run in 5 years. Died & gone to Heaven!!ski.gif

@TheDad: glad you suffered a core shot, as well (my gash, which I thought was just clogged with snow, turned out to be a good 3" long core number). Sorry you suffered a Charlie Manson on your hip.

I attempted to fill your shoes for the final laps of the day and escorted a crew up to Lower Saddle (it was actually Davluri's idea, but he couldn't remember the exact route). Freshies were had. As Tseeb remarked, we then traved over to Lower Counterweight Gully / Sherwood Cliffs. More Freshies were had. That was easily the best/deepest and non-shark infested snow of the day. Everything went smoothly except for my encounter with a creek down off the Loop Road (end of day tally: Creeks 2; Dookey  0). The smarter of the remaining crew didn't follow me into what ended up being a 8 foot pit that took me about 15 minutes to crawl out of. Sadly, no pictures were taken.

Heal well, my friend!

I had a fun first day in Tahoe. Its always funny when I ski a resort for the first time and you roll up and its socked in low vis and dumping and I am like, where am I where do I go from here? Didn't matter. The powder was as good as anything I have skied all season. And it skied better as the day went on and the snow got skied up and more dense. I made a few bad decisions like following phil through what looked like a perfectly innocent meadow...

Indeed!

I will have the camera with me today. See everyone at Rose. Slideside is the meet point.

I heard there were other ski's that suffered similar dimises?

Heal up or hang out with the other walking wounded at the base tomorrow......icon14.gif

Had a call from Trekchick.  Meeting place is Main Mount Rose Lodge 3rd floor where there is a place to change and stash boots.  Park in the main lot at the summit.

Thanks for the concern, all. I'm walking almost normally this morning, and with a lot less pain.  Should be good to go in a couple days.

Thanks!  As for the skis, just remember that there is no ski that improves with age; it's just a question of how fast they decline.

It's called the Lower Saddle to distinguish it from the Upper Saddle, which was the one through which you traversed before you got to Keyhole.

Awesome.  FYI, skier's left of Keyhole -- between Keyhole and Alpine Bowl -- is the Palisades.

I'd rather be the chick magnet, but I guess you take what you can get.

I'm glad you guys got over there.  It was really tempting to make the hike, but I was concerned that it might not pay off.  Sounds like it did, in spades.

Currently snowing at 6500', with avy bombs going off.

Its still snowing at south lake?!!?

I'm gonna try like hell to get up to nstar tomorrow, roads could be interesting. Judging by the winds that are coming with the next storm then I think it will be the safest bet anyway! Stay safe out there...

A sign of what a great group you guys are:  when a skier is willing to use a snowplow in front of a total stranger, when it's the best turn to use to float over rocks, demonstrates honesty, candor, and humbleness.

Oh, and forgetting the route is just the tip of the iceberg that is my brain. haha  man that was a cool experience, just new and scary enough to awaken the senses. Incredibly beautiful rock formations and lighting. wow.

great skiing with you guys. I'll be back for Thursday, with some powder skis. heck yeah!

Anyone have a spare ticket to Northstar they'd like to trade for one valid at Squaw/Alpine (any day all season)? If I can get a bunch of stuff done here in the Bay Area today, I'm going to head up tonight and try to meet the crew tomorrow. I'll PM Dookey, but if any of you other bears ended up with a spare voucher or ticket that's valid at N* tomorrow, let me know.

I am working on coming up later in the week since the back spasms are going away (it's a golfing thing) and it would be great fun to meet everyone as they make the pilgrimage to the South Shore.  Besides, the pass is now good at Kirkwood.  Have fun today with all the demos...

Are you skiing Thu as well?  Cool!

I can't seem to find the list of the various meet-up locations.  Can someone toss me a link?

does that mean that I get full credit for all the core shots sustained on the adventure?  redface.gif

Hairfarmr and I had a great day at Squaw: the avi bombs started early and the pow was nice.

I have a 6-pack voucher good for N-star but need to cover Squaw.  If we can get together, we can set it up,
