haha i wish it was deep with faceshots but I do tend to find sweet soft snow to ski on more often than not.
its my powderland and not anyone else because everyone else is either A. Lame, or B. out of shape, or C. both. I would rather work my ass off for 4 runs of mostly untracked than ski the chair lift for 15-20 laps in a day.
the worst thing about having the gathering here Ill most likely be forced to ski hardpack for many runs over skiing powder or other soft snow for a few runs. I can not predict the weather. I am hoping for A.Snow, B. no new snow but soft conditions. C. spring conditions. D. Rain to make it soft at least on groomers an bumps, E. sunny or cloudly hardpack
you guys can have you thread back, I was just razzing the East Coast guys who left some amazing snow.post #1114 of 13182/27/12 at 5:11am
Josh, I sure am happy that you're having a great time and skiing blower powder at Stowe.
I'm (personally) really enjoying your TR's, and will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing those TR's!!
Thanks for letting us take back the stoke.
Oh, and I woke to a couple inches of snow in Reno, which usually translates to some nice snow at the resorts. See you at Alpine Meadows!post #1115 of 13182/27/12 at 5:30amQuote:Originally Posted by chrisandy

thanks everyone for a great ski day; notwithstanding the east coast conditions. think snow!
Your son Chris was splendid company, and comported himself with poise and dignity that is all too rare in people his age. You've done a-bang up job of raising him.
Should be grand watching the young ripper play around in the bumps, now that we've got a little bit of fresh on the hill.post #1116 of 13182/27/12 at 5:58ampost #1117 of 13182/27/12 at 6:22am
I just got up and it's snowing here at Incline Village with a few inches on the ground.

Just got back from the Colorado drive in the wee hours, look at the weather and this happens. You guys need to come into town more often! Anyhow I'm at Heavenly around 10ish this morning seeing I spent a lot on tix in Utah/Colorado. See you guys on the Vail Days, keep thinking snow!post #1122 of 13182/27/12 at 8:04ampost #1123 of 13182/27/12 at 8:58am
Damn, snow all week - it's looking good. I'm calling this weather karma for the folks who stuck with their plans to come out regardless of the bad season we're having. I'm slammed at work but I'm hoping I can take off Thursday and meet you all at Squaw (is that still the schedule, I assume?).post #1124 of 13182/27/12 at 9:08amQuote:Originally Posted by JayT

Here is Sugar Bowl in the early afternoon. Looks like about a foot on the picnic tables at the base lodge. This storm dumped a lot more than the forecasters' expected. What a nice surprise.post #1132 of 13182/27/12 at 4:43pm
I just got back from a great day at Alpine Meadows. A special thank you to our guides - I mostly stuck with Phil and it was a good thing he was there, because most of the day we couldn't see much!
I think the amount of snow we got was unexpected. I saw SUVs off the road, cars stuck on the highway and general mayhem on the road back to Incline Village. It's looking more like the Tahoe I was hoping for every minute :)
I'm looking forward to Mount Rose tomorrow!post #1133 of 13182/27/12 at 5:33pm

Find someone with a season pass. With a season pass you get an opportunity for a few buddy passes for $60 each and Ski with a friend discounts ($19 off). There's limit to each type with each pass.post #1137 of 13182/27/12 at 6:32pm
So sorry I am not able to meet up with yall this week. But i wanted to check on your meet up plans for Tuesday @ Mt. Rose.
You have an opportunity to really enjoy Mt. Rose as few get the opportunity to do it right.
they got 18" of snow today with almost no wind, It appears its going to keep snowing tonight and tommrow?
that means powder day @ the Rose.
For those who really like powder skiing, YOU NEED to meet up @ the East Side (Slide Side) Zepher Chair before 8 am. Get inline for an 8:30 AM take off.
It is something to experience.
No guide necessary, you will be wasted on Powder by 9:30 AM.
You can get 3 or 4 runs in and still ski down to the Rose side before 9AM Nothing like cutting first tracks down Northwest Passage and waving to the lift line.
Again sorry i have to miss this, But don't be a fool!!! Early to the Slide Side for what might be an Epic powder day'
Get up early, eat, get that coffee fix, show up dressed to ski. You will park within 20 or 30 yards of the lift. Ticket window right next to the lift.post #1138 of 13182/27/12 at 6:56pm
Thanks Mike! We are staying in Tahoe Vista and an early start is possible from here. Today we saw about a foot of fresh light snow at Alpine. The snow was light and not well bonded to the ice and rock underneath, so some ski damage was still done. It is not only snowing now, but a significant storm event over 20 inches is now forecast for Tuesday night, so the Wednesday event will be deep. I have to take a dig on Tony Crocker here....Mammoth will be missed.
BY TUESDAY NIGHT, NEXT TROUGH BEGINS TO IMPACT THE REGION. GFS/EC/NAM ALL IN GOOD AGREEMENT ON TIMING AND IF ANYTHING ARE SLIGHTLY FASTER THAN PREV RUNS. FIRST OFF, SNOW POTENTIAL FOR TAHOE-LASSEN STILL LOOKS GOOD BEGINNING LATE EVENING AND CONTINUING THROUGH WEDNESDAY. MODELS ARE NOT SHOWING GREAT SPILLOVER INTO THESE AREAS, BUT I BELIEVE THIS TO BE UNDERDONE. ONE, WIND SPEEDS INCREASE WITH HEIGHT ESPECIALLY AFTER 12Z WED, FAVORABLE FOR SPILLOVER. SECOND, THERE IS ALSO SOME INSTABILITY UP THROUGH 600-550 MB WHICH WILL AID SPILLOVER. HEAVIEST SNOW LOOKS TO OCCUR FROM 09-18Z AS COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH. EXPECT SOME SPILLOVER INTO NORTHERN WASHOE COUNTY SO WILL NEED TO WATCH TO SEE IF AN ADVISORY IS NEEDED THERE WED MORNING. UPGRADED WATCHES TO WARNINGS WITH UP TO 20 INCHES POSSIBLE NEAR THE CREST AND UP TO A FOOT FURTHER EAST IN THE BASIN AND FOR WESTERN LASSEN COUNTY/ FURTHER SOUTH, THE UPPER LEVEL SUPPORT FOR PRECIP IS NOT AS GOOD. IN ADDITION, THE MOISTURE RAPIDLY SHALLOWS SO THE FOCUS BECOMES MORE ON WIND FOR THE I-80 CORRIDOR OF WESTERN NEVADA SOUTH INTO MONO AND MINERAL COUNTIES. WILL DISCUSS EACH REGION SEPARATELY BELOW, FIRST WITH RENO-CARSON.post #1139 of 13182/27/12 at 7:11pmQuote:
The weather report seems to be saying the snow tapered off after 4PM, so there will probably only be a few inches of fresh tomorrow morning (not that I'm complaining!)
Bigger snow coming in Tuesday night right through Wednesday, maybe into Thursday...
Photo/video uploads are slooooooooow from where we're staying. The ones from my iPhone are up, and the ones from the small camera are slowly trickling in. The HD videos are crawling. I'm putting the pictures in a Flickr set, but marked them private. You'll need to follow this link to see them:
Feel free to download or reprint them for any personal use. If you drill down into the individual images, you can get full-size versions.
When it started to clear, I got a few bump videos of the group I skied with in the afternoon. They're veeeeeery slooooowly uploading to Youtube.
I'm planning to drag the SLR out tomorrow, which I can actually take action shots with. :-)
Action videos (I hope):

Mount Rose Update
since we got 8-10 inches at the lake today
I thought I should force myself to take a couple of hours this afternoon to check out Rose - purely on behalf of the bears of course
Rose is reporting 18 inches and it looked and skied a whole lot different than yesterday!
It skied like a real (as opposed to marketing) 18 inches and means we can get to a whole lot more of the mountain tomorrow! Also, the Chutes remained closed today so, assuning Avi control in the morning, we have a great chance of some fresh tracks when they open tomorrow. Keep watching for the ropes dropping!.
Downside of course is that with the fresh cover we will begetting some edge/base hits so if you are squeamish about that be warned!.
431, Mt Rose Highway was under chain/snow tire restrictions today but snow seems to have stopped for the moment so should be clear by tomorrow. (NDOT does not usually impose chain control checks like CDOT but be warned).
As MTT indicated, Slide side, where we are meeting, runs the first lift at 08.30 so time for a couple of quick runs before we meet up at 09.00 if anyone is up for that. I plan to be there by 8.00, so look for a white Audi SUV in the car park, or I will be wearing a brown POC helmet, blue coat, navy pants if on the hill.
look forward to seeing you all there!
