2012 Gathering in Lake Tahoe 2/26-3/3/12

The Gathering 2012 Greetings from “Lake Tahoe”

heavenly-lake-tahoe-mtn.jpg

Between now and September we will be adding additional tips and suggestions for lodging and ticket.

Resorts:

2/26 Sunday: Skiers Choice/Arrival Day for some

2/27 Monday: Alpine Meadows

2/28 Tuesday: Mt. Rose

2/29 Wednesday: Northstar at Tahoe

3/1  Thursday: Squaw Valley

3/2  Friday: Heavenly

3/3  Saturday: Kirkwood

*exact days ARE subject to change depending on weather and last possible event/demo schedules.

Festivities:

We will be posting these as they become available and nailed down. Two things for sure there will be a wine/cheese/meet/greet at The Start Haus one night and there will also be a Sushi Night at The Atlantis (in Reno) which has a killer all you can eat sushi bar. I will also be calling in “favors” to my local reps for “special” demo days.

Lodging:

House/Condo Rental: Craigslist and VBRO are great option if looking for a house or condo or rent or share

North Lake Tahoe/Kings Beech/Tahoe City/Incline Village: Right on the lake with a great “Tahoe feel” Alpine, Northstar, Squaw and Sugar Bowl being 1/2 hour and Heavenly all being less than an hour away and Kirkwood being about 1.5 hours.

Truckee Region: Pretty centrally located to Alpine, Northstar, Squaw and Sugar Bowl with Heavenly being just over an hour away and Kirkwood being 2 hours. Motels & house rentals are best option.

Reno: Easy access from airport with the most inexpensive lodging options. Access to Alpine, Northstar, Squaw and Sugar Bowl 45-1 hour up rt 80 with Heavenly being an hour away and Kirkwood being 2 hours. Ski & Stay packages being checked on. Most hotels have transportation to MOST resorts (Sugar Bowl & Kirkwood might be the exception), you could get away without having a rental car.

SLT (South Lake Tahoe): Very Picturesque. Alpine, Northstar, Squaw and Sugar Bowl being just over an hour away and Kirkwood being 1/2 hour. Casino Ski & Stay Packages, Craigslist and VBRO options.

Transportation:

Reno (RNO) is a great city to fly into with little or no problem with delays. Reno is a bit easier than the back up option of Sacramento (SAC). Southwest and Continental are the major airlines to fly into Reno and remember Southwest is a “skier friendly” airline where baggage flies free. Rental cars are reasonable in Reno also.

Tickets:

“Go North Tahoe” interchangeable ticket (hopefully will be offered 2012) and we will post other “discount ticket” hints (2 for 1‘s, ect..) as they become available.

Keep an eye out soon for the www.skilaketahoe.com '6 paks' which averaged (iirc) $60 a day for 6 days at a variety of resorts. A voucher will say good at 'Squaw or ..." "Alpine Meadows or ....". Roughly there's 3 days at the northshore resorts of Alpine, Squaw, Northstar and Mt Rose, and 3 at Heavenly, Kirkwood or Sierra.

Look also at www.snowbomb.com's discount lift passes and the coupons for discounts.

Another bonus if you are active duty military is a few of those resorts offer FREE lift tickets to you. Most at least offer a good discount for active duty.Hopefully that will continue to be the case next year.

Contesstant, you should come out for this!

I'll admit, it will be tough to beat the great times at the Colorado Gathering OFFICIAL 2011 "The Gathering" Trip report!!!!

But, when you get a Buncha Bears, Beautiful Lake Tahoe, and world class skiing together, somethings bound to bring out the Whooooo Hooooooo's!!!!yahoo.gif

I'm hoping we can! Tahoe just has such special meaning to us that it's hard to keep us away :D We'll see how things play out next winter with possible moves, etc. It's the last year we can yank peewee out of school without repurcussions so we need to take advantage of that, too (not skiing on the busy holiday weeks/weekends is always a bonus.) It's on the radar for sure!!!

I can't wait! Now less than 300 days to go (299 to be exact) wink.gif

It's educational!!!!!! Seriously, they will learn more in one week in Lake Tahoe than they will that week at school. I hate this aspect of schools holier than though attitude.

Preaching to the choir here! I found out next year, her final year of preschool, she'll have homework. Homework for PRESCHOOL??! I didn't even GO to preschool! Anyway, we love teaching her life skills and hope she decides next year skiing is fun. If not, there's always child care :D

Hey you guys snaked our dates. That's the traditional date for our Mid-Atlantic Blue Knob Gathering. I just don't understand why anyone would pass on skiing such a unique little rock and ice pile just to ski those huge snowy peaks at Tahoe.nonono2.gif

Oh, man!  I was hoping to do both next year.

Hmmmm, guess I'll go wherever Old Boot goes..... but I'll let him go first =)

We are looking at other dates bumpfreaq, if you are really interested. Maybe even a change of venue too. Look for a thread in the future.

Decisions, decisions. I have to admit, I might be lured by Tahoe over Blue Knob. MIGHT, that is. wink.gif

You caught me. I was capitalizing on the ever evolving growth of the Blue Knob Gathering and planned on stealing your thunder. Dman. I will hope these two Epic events will be able to coexist peacefully.

We're not letting 'Knobs' in??? A 'knob' has an uncharitable meaning where I come from :)

I'll email a lady at a resort marketing dept about a deal. They gave a bunch of us at Squaw a pile of 2-for-1 vouchers and a guide. I'll also facebook my friend at Snowbomb.

Alpine Meadows tends to be generous with the 2-for-1 vouchers as well... I'll see if I can get ahold of a few before next February.

Oh I could make some blue humor remark about polished knobs but my fine sense of internet decorum will prevent me. biggrin.gif

TheMid-Atlantic crowd is well represented at the Big National Gathering but since you are the usurpers then I can't see how that can be at all possible.duel.gif

I'll take a few extra Blue Knob stickers and paste them on the GM's new skis.

Doh!  My kids' winter break is the previous week.  Still, there's overlap on the 26th.  Any idea what day(s) will be at Squaw?  I'm pretty much ignorant when it comes to an Epic Gathering.  Is there an FAQ?  Is it OK to drop in and out?

Xela come for a day or come for the week it's allgood.

I hear ya, although the terrain in Tahoe cannot compete but Sushi buffet vs JohnL's famous pancakes you gotta consider that too.

Fixed it for you Jimmy!

I figure there'll be lots of dropping in and out with people staying all around the lake or in Reno.

As I have a Squaw (and Heavenly/Nstar Tahoe Pass) season pass, I'm planning to stay at Squaw for the week which'll be near enough to the drinks/dining in Truckee. But it's a hike from Squaw to Sushi in Reno/Atlantis (especially when Mamasake is in Squaw's village). And Kirkwood and Heavenly might be 'out' for me with the possibility the Emerald Bay Road (b/w Squaw&Alpine and Kirkwood/Heavenly area) is closed because of storms.

Don't want to hijack this Tahoe thread, but FYI those of us who usually try to do a mid-Atlantic gathering with members of Epicski/DCSki will probably look at a GTG over the weekend of Feb 10-12, 2012.  The likely venue will be Blue Knob, PA or Timberline, WV. We're going to weigh our options and decide late this Fall, then we'll post a notice here in a separate thread.

I'm sure the Tahoe gathering will be great and I wish you all the best with it.

No official FAQ, but that's a great idea.

As others have said, people tend to come to any part of The Gathering that works out, and some may even switch up days at resorts outside of the official itinerary.

Hope you come to part (or all) of it!

I'm hoping a lift and/or accom deal is offered by Alpine Meadows/Homewood (and Snowbomb) to Philpug and/or Gathermeister. There's some really out of the way runs the locals know.

Fyi Tahoe Sands Resort in Tahoe Vista, (roughly in the middle of the lake's north shore) has 1 bedroom cabins on the sandy beach at $85 + tax a night.  There's a queen bed, sofa-bed and kitchen and dining/lounge. Buses for Alpine Meadows and Northstar pull up at the reception area, and I'm pretty sure Squaw's shuttle bus also picks people up there too. I'd guess the units are 8-10 miles from Homewood, Alpine Meadows, Squaw and Northstar. The units are probably, iirc, an hour drive to Heavenly along the eastern beach road.

Add to lodging suggestions:  Granlibakken.  As I've said before, it's in a good location (just south of Tahoe City), reasonably priced (particularly in the larger, sharable condos), has a great buffet breakfast, and has shuttles to many resorts.  In fact, I'd suggest a group effort of some sort.

The Stanford Alpine Chalet also typically has reasonable rates.
