Squaw (N. Tahoe) Conditions - Page 3

Shirley was fantastic. One + feet of mid winter powder. Enough falling to fill in the tracks nicely. Enough people on the hill to make you feel part of a group but no real lift lines. Excellent conditions!

KT was a bit challenging. Lots of good snow covering but icy and very uneven underneath. West face was OK because you could see where the underneath features were (big moguls). Horse trails were tough as yesterday's tracks and slush slides were hidden to the eyes but would occasionally affect my skis. Maybe if I had gone out on powder skis I would have floated over the top of it but I struggled on my skinny Goodes even where it was untracked. Still I had a lot of fun in the most technically challenging good powder I've skied.

It is still snowing hard even after the close. Maybe first tracks tomorrow, watch the bike race start (in the snow) then back to the real world (Alexzn's) and 80F waterskiing.

Got out for a few earned turns on Tallac midday.  It has been dumping all afternoon!

May have to get over to Squaw tomorrow.  They will be open right?

There is enough snow to feel like bottomless on the first few laps. The snow is very sticky. It is typical Squaw weather, wind and whiteout. Tomorrow is going to be even better.

Isn't the Amgen tour cancelled?

I think they're down to weekends only.

There's a big part of me that wishes I'd gone out today but I got some stuff done at home that I needed to get done.

Happy 2011 Season AM!

Thanks.

Race was canceled today, don't know about tomorrow.  Lots of factory cars with bikes on the roof heading around 89 on my way home today.

Forecast for Squaw Monday is 35* and snow showers.  I think its time for me to pack my boot bag and sniff out some Squaw snow!

Fantastic conditions this morning. Plenty of untracked powder - even after Squaw's website advertised a 10AM start which we made but the lifts had been spinning since 9. Too bad they moved the bike race so we didn't get to see any of it but the excellent conditions soothed our disappointment.

No lift lines but every chair was filled. Squaw is doing something right to get this kind of utilization - even if the ticket booths weren't too busy. Thanks to the management there for offering us these great weird season days.

It began snowing again as I left Squaw around 12:30.  Kinda sucked that they advertised a 10am opening, but I was skiing by 9:30 anyway.  Snow lasted even in the sun off Red Dog ridge & North Bowl.  Other aspects got heavy pretty early, but still fun.  $39 to the cause was not to bad for powder tracks on May 16th.

Palisades, as filled in as I have ever seen them.

The Fingers, not so filled in.

I got to the Special Tickets office about 8:30 and was in line at the KT22 lift early enough to catch(about) the 6th chair.  Everything skied pretty well off of KT, and killed it off to lookers left in the trees.  Some good skiing off Headwall, but it was skied out pretty fast.

There were plenty of openings in the clouds to give way to bluebird moments but overall, the possibility of snow clouds rolling in was ever present.

Squaw May16th

I had some amazing Whoooo Hooooo turns off the cornice to skiers right of Olympic Lady

Squaw Cornice 5-16

The run went something like this......whooo hooooo, whoo hoooo, whooo hoooooo.......yahoo.gif

Oh Sh!t!

All in all, a great day of skiing from 9 AM to 12:30 PM

JF, sure wish I'd known you were there.  I'd have bought you a beer on the deck!

No, I'd have bought you one :)

I was lapping KT most of the morning.

That's where I spent most of my time too, except for the occasional diversion.  But seriously, the trees to the far skiers right of Olympic Lady were skiing very nice!

Yup, we were like ships passing in the night.  I think that is where I was skiing mostly as well.

+1 biggrin.gif...

Maybe it is time to start scheming to try to come up this weekend...  However looks like it will be a couple of days of rain followed by warm sunny days, so today was likely the last powder day of the season.

Hmmm.  So tempting.  But I think I should continue to heal for the time being.

What's healing?  Broken bones, broken spirit, or broken heart?  Snow will heal a broken spirit ..........just sayin!

Torn left calf.  And the blister on the right is almost healed.

NLT got hit today with an additional 10 inches expected tonight.  So much for spring skiing, eh?

Will be winding up my season with Squaw tomorrow and Mammoth Mountain on my way home on Sunday.  What's the best way to ski Squaw?  Looks like it will be warm tomorrow.

If you can hang out here til Sunday, I'll ski with you at Squaw. I'm working Fri/Sat

My that is tempting!  I'll at least drop by the shop to say hi after I'm off the slopes tomorrow.

Not working at that shop in the spring/summer.  I'll miss you.frown.gif

Catch you next time I'm back in SLT.

Gimme a heads up and I'll head down your way for some SLT dining, or riding or something.

Without trying to hijack this thread, I wanted to put in a plug for the newly-created Squaw Valley group here on EpicSki.  Please join here.  I'm not sure exactly how this new groups feature is going to play out, but I'd like to put our best foot forward and give it a shot.  As far as I can guess, the group needs a critical mass of members to really work.  Thanks.

I will be at Squaw tomorrow if anyone is going to be around.
