Watch the link above, wait for the last 10 seconds. Gary Johnson announced that he is planning to ski Tuckerman's this weekend. Since I am generally luke warm on all [politicians, you got to give an advantage to one who will ski the backcountry.

He's supposed to go tomorrow. Anyone else doing the same?

A politician doesn't get my vote just because they ski until they huck a cliff with a GoPro. Go big or go home.

Heh, Gary Johnson.  Well, the dude teles.  I've skied with him a little at Taos - he smokes the hike up the ridge.  He's summited Everest.

Oh yeah, here's a picture of him, his late wife, me and my wife.  Long story:

But I'd rather vote for someone else.

What... story time - how'd you meet him?

Well, if you were a regular on the ridge at Taos you'd run into him sooner or later.

[story] But I first met him through work.  Back at the turn of the millenium he was governor and I happened to be the chair of the regional board of federal and state fire directors that oversees all the wildfire activity in the southwest.  It was a severe drought year and early on a prescribed fire got away and burned into the town of Los Alamos - the fire was called the Cerro Grande fire.  That set an anxious tone with the governor's office, and as the chair, I got called into his office for some 'splainin'.  That fire season was so severe that I met with him and/or his staff fairly regularly to discuss/splain the fire situation across the southwest.  And as the years went by I ran into him at Taos or at things in Santa Fe like the Banff film festival. [/story]  I haven't seen him for a year or so, but I guess he's been busy.

But that picture of us has a somewhat more amusing story. Near the end of that fire season I got a call from a staff member in his office telling me that the governor wanted to honor the "Heroes of the Cerro Grande Fire" at some kind of big function.  I felt there wasn't any reason for me to go to that, and the conversation went like this:
me; I just did my job and I didn't do anything noteworthy, seriously.

her: That's what everyone says.

me: Yeah but in my case it's true, so thanks but...

her: There'll be a big dinner - free.

me: Free, huh?  [dirtbag instinct kicks in]

her: Steak.

me: ... What should I wear?

her: Dress western. (hangs up)

So I got a medal and my picture taken with GJ.  The steak dinner was pretty damn good.

One other ski-related trivia item about GJ - when he summited Everest he was guided by Dave Hahn who is a (bad-ass in his own right) patroller at Taos.

Yep that sounds like it.  Thought it was NM, but this looks correct.  I bet nobody got a medal and steak dinner for that one!
