Skis for Mt Hood - July 2011

I have just signed my 13-almost-14 year old for a summer training camp @ Mt Hood in the first 2 weeks of July. Problem is that he, due to a good-sized growth spurt, has outgrown his skis, and maybe his boots. I know that there are lots demos at that time, but I would like to be able to guarantee equipment for him there, i.e book, rent, etc. I figure a rental fee would offset the cost of extra baggage anyways and less stuff to lug through airports anyhow.

Never have been there myself, is there any place, shop that I can book/rent that will guarantee he has the right equipment? The guaranteed booking is the important part since I can't leave it to chance that he will get stuff. The 2012 stuff isn't available yet and all the local shops have switched over to summer gear.  I am looking at most likely Rossi/Dynastar 155SLs and 175 or 183GSs. Volkl would be a second choice. Unfortunately Head, Fischer, and Atomic don't for him.

Any leads or help are appreciated.

Have you called/googled Hood or any of the shops in Gresham area that would be my first step. You might end up buying equipment depending on availability.

Two places to check out:

Ski Chalet in SW Portland http://www.skichaletpdx.com/

and Hillcrest Sports in Gresham http://www.hillcrestsports.com/

Both places have Rossignol rentals - boots and skis, and are pretty well supporting the summer camps on Mt Hood.

Hey, ZG

What camp is your son going out with?

I've been going out to Hood for many years, and work at MHSSC.  I can assure you there are skis to demo out there.  The tricky part will be keeping skis for both weeks.  If the camp is constantly going into Govy (goverment camp) then it should not be a problem.  If it is a camp that only goes every few days then itll be a problem.

The camp is organized by a couple of local coaches. Last year they joined in with a team from MN (Gilboa) and they stayed in Govy. I am almost certain that they will be staying there again. I know there are demos available, but availability isn't guaranteed. If I could secure skis then he'd be on the correct one for size/ability and I also wouldn't have to fly with two sets with him (and minimum extra $200-250 on top the flight costs).

I'll check on the links above to start.

Cheers.
