Favorite thing about being in/on the mountains.

Thread Starter

Just curious since I've been having a lot of discussions with my skiing friends about missing the season already (we're in boarding school and, unfortunately, we're restricted to campus for the last bits of spring skiing) about what our favorite things about skiing/boarding are.

So what's yours? What's the most awe-inspiring or adrenaline pumping thing about your experience on the mountain(s)?

everything is in the 'NOW'

the realization of where and who you are, the connect to what surrounds you.

the true dimension of what you are

it holds true also in the water, or out ridin the bike, on a mtn side its all just a bit more.

no apps needed, no msgs to answer, no distractions from the moment, unless you allow them.

it's the full opposite of oprah, MTV, adult swim.

It's active, not passive

you decide to go or you decide to hold and see the world move around you.

no drugs needed

it's not about the tools, its about the being

the mtns have an endless season, so no worries, every time I'm privileged to be there, I find surprises.

course, Black Fly season back in the NE can sometimes test that resolve... wink.gif

its all good - which can't be said about a lot of our life in the human hive

I like the way sound travels differently, hear someone across the valley like they are right next to you, then fresh snow makes it sound muffely.

Today was a good pow day for April, should be even better tomorrow.

The one thing I love more than anything else is to find a spot on a storm day, with no one around, and just take in the sights and sounds of the storm. It's one of my places I go to that puts everything into perspective for me.

No me, no mountain, no sky, all the stuff in my brain replaced by wind.

It gets me HIGH! who needs drugs, screw that, ill take the drug my body produces naturally. Powder is always the most amazing feeling ive ever felt. The only thing more amazing than powder is dropping a rock into powder.

The smells: clean air, crisp, evergreens, perhaps catching a waft of some hard wood burning in the distance, or of the Wafflehause to get me salivating.  Then there are the snow covered vistas, like a winter wonderland....trees covered in marshmallowy white goodness.  The lack of noise....snow makes everything nice and quiet, that much more in the mountains.

+1 to this.

Since I ski mostly not on powder frown.gif, the way I can hear my skis on the snow, feel the rhythm of my skiing, and get into the zone. When I'm in the zone, the way I can feel my breath as I'm gliding and just breathe.

And, of course, the friends on the mountain who make the lift rides more entertaining and the aprés worth hanging around.

Something about being able to see the far horizon gives me a renewed sense of optimism.
