All I can say is WOW - two fun-filled days of skiing with great people capped off with a party at the beach (and my endlessly obnoxious good-byes - I really didn't want to leave...so why did I leave...?).  Many thanks to those who pulled all of this together - I can only hope to be at the next one for more than two days and even help out a bit (or maybe that's not a good thing...).  Either way, so many more new faces to look forward to seeing and skiing with again...can't wait (and those last screaming laps on Pali sure ended the season with a kaboom - thanks for joining me on those)!biggrin.gif

Actually the crack from the lifties was whether or not MastersRacer had jumped any buses or canyons lately. biggrin.gif

The gathering is a unique opportunity to get "more" from your ski vacation.  For those that couldn't join in or thought why bother you missed an excellent opportunity to meet some great skiers and most importantly some really great people.

The gathering provides:

1. Plenty of ski buddies

2. Guided tours of the mountains (for free no less)

3. "Locals" knowledge of how to ski the mountain and where the best stuff is

4. Good food and drink

5. Possibly new life long friends

So when was the last time you got that out of your ski vacation? wink.gif

I also want to shout out my thanks to all those involved - from those that helped "organize and provide" to those that blindly trusted me as we threw our bodies over a cornice or two, through a mogul or two, and around a tree or two.  I'm just disappointed I couldn't do the whole week and missed much of the evening festivities.  And I can't wait for Tahoe next season.

That is a good one too.

I remember back in the 7th grade I was really into that look -- flag motif shoes, watchband, belt...

From the comments I assume the plan is for the Gathering to be in Tahoe next year.  Any details?

As some of you know, I'm a moderator and features writer for FirstTracksOnline, so my TR's and pics for the week are posted there.

A-Basin 4/8: http://www.firsttracksonline.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9613

It was a great week with a lot of great people.  A very impressive organizing job by Uncle Louie.  I have a very extensive travel schedule during ski season, but it's quite likely I'll be able to attend next year in Tahoe and perhaps lend a bit of local knowledge, hopefully not too out of date.

By the numbers snow conditions were in the average range for Summit County at this time of year.  The 13 inches new snow is about an average week.  We were lucky that it came all at once and early in the week.  Temps/wind etc. were also about what I expected. I knew snow preservation was good but it exceeded expectations above 11.500 feet at Breck on 4/7.  Also Loveland 4/9, which I'll get posted in a day or two.  Vail 4/6 was the only subpar day for conditions, but 3 hours of skiing with vailsnopro was, as someone else said, "good for you."

Link for 4/8 at A-Basin is corrected as of 6PM on 4/10.  Thanks for the catch..

Sue,

Fixed it! My apologies to MV.....and he deserves a big thank you.

And to all who attended, thanks to Segbrown who paid a considerable stipend to A-base for the reserved spot for the beach party! As Bazzer stated "she a beautiful, a beautiful skier, and, most important, a beautiful person. Both Bazzer and I appreciated the beautiful people we skied with, and that was all who were in attendance.

Tony - nice writeups.  But your last link goes to the wrong place (somebody else's Alta trip).

Definitely a fun filled week! It was great to ski with some old friends, meet new friends and put faces with screen names. Wish I could have joined for more days …maybe next time.

Thanks to Uncle Louie and everyone that came out to play.

Enjoy the rest of your season and put Mother's Day at Abasin on the calendar.

Best regards,

Chris

PS Breck is flat….

Made it home, but didn't want to leave!

Thanks, Gathermeister and friends; I can't remember what I expected, but it doesn't really matter.  This week was better.

I had so much fun skiing with everyone and guiding as I could.  I hope all of you will keep in touch and let me know when you're headed back to Colorado.

I'm pretty sure this is where I'm saying "I hope you're not taking a picture of this". And how come it doesn't look like it's as steep as a cliff from this angle?

I want to add a note of thanks to all those who organized, guided, cooked, reserved the beach parking spot, etc., etc., for  this gathering.

The highlight of the week for me was when Lady Salina encouraged/guided/picked-a-line and had me follow her down Pali Main Street on Friday at A-Basin. Thanks Lady_Salina! Encouragement at the top from SKI-3PO, KingGrump, Mr. Vertical and Matthias99 helped, too.

Other memorable moments:  At Copper on Saturday, the hike up the ridge line in the blowing and howling winds, off the Sierra Lift (??) was a memorable experience.  I never did a hike up a ridgeline before. The three runs down the Spaluding Bowl (??) in the afternoon were intense, the steep pitch pushed the envelope of the comfort zone for me. But today I am glad I did it.

The whole beach scene, picnic table and cookout on Friday at A-Basin was very nice, too. Conditions played out well, the warmer weather in the afternoon, the sun and soft snow right on the edge of the beach, and even the dogs running (and limping) around all added to the cool vibe. You’d never get to experience this unless you’re local, or part of a group like this.

It was just a double green run.

Hats off to Uncle Louie, organizers and all the guides that made the gathering possible and fun.

This is my first gathering and had a blast. Meet and skied with lots of great people.

Couldn't remember the last time I had so much fun with a group of strangers - especially with my clothes on.

Looking forward to Tahoe next year.

Thanks for the TR. Glad you guys had an awesome gathering. Lots of familiar faces it'd be nice to see again sometime...

If you're heading back up today, I could arrange a very good guide, if your interested?

Some additional pics

From Vail

A very hard day to ski. Thanks to Coskigirl and Segbrown for trying to find us some decent skiing. Mostly we got frozen cattracks going from one area to another. That that does not kill you, makes you a better skier.

A Vail view, don't be fooled, this was the only sun we saw, and, not enough to soften up the frozen crust that looked tasty, skied like east coast

At day's end, Deliberate 1 knew of a Sushi Restaurant west of Vail, so about 15 on us went out to dinner. If you are a Sushi newb, like me, take Dsloan with you. She is a friend of MikeC and a LA native now in Pittsburg ( wonder if she knows BWPA? - sorry Bush, she's married ). Her smile rocks!

I had a wonderful time at the Gathering - met lots of new people and reconnected with some friends.  I skied hard some days, and took it easy on others (second Vail day tequila sunrises in the lodge before doing groomers in the PM.)  I'm hoping my schedule will permit me to join the Gathering next year at Lake Tahoe.  Many thanks to Uncle Louie for organizing this event and to all the guides, food providers and such.  I told my family when I got home that this gathering was the most fun I had ever had skiing!

I echo all the thanks to those that made this possible, and enhanced our experience and enjoyment once we were there.

Fabulous to meet up with old friends and to make new ones.  I am very happy to have had the chance to ski with the Bears!

Today under the bright sunshine, in 8 inches of fresh, in Whale's tail ............. I missed every single one of you.  I'd have swapped it for the Vail day in a heartbeat (but not more than the one time mind).
