Why Bears?

I'm new to the forums and feel like I'm about to ask the, "Mommy, where do babies come from?" question, but I'm going to suck it up and ask anyway.  Why do members call themselves Bears? / Barking Bears?  What is the history of that?

The original idea was to create sort of a post-ski pub environment in which people could hang-out and chat -- sharing stories. So I wanted sort of an English pub sounding name -- along the lines of some actual pubs like "The Mangy Moose" or "The Drunken Dragon".

It being a ski-forum, I wanted an animal that lived in the mountains as well as an adjective that suggested expressing oneself verbally. So, logicaly I named the forum "The Barking Beaver Forum". I also liked the industrious reputation of the beaver as we were setting out to build a community.

Well, you would not believe the imaginations that some people have. In fact, one member told the story of how he got in trouble at work when his boss saw him reading the Barking Beaver Forums in the office. Eventually, it occurred to me that perhaps a more inviting name would make a larger group of people feel more welcome, so when the site was completely revamped and the new forum software installed, the name was changed to "The Barking Bear Forum".

...and now you know the rest of the story.

It's a very funny story, especially the part about AC not thinking the name was a bit distaff. Then we found out that bears aren't entirely without salacious references either. For a while we considered being the Barking Boars, but that was prone to misspelling. (wink.gif

Bear or maggot either way web forum nicknames are pretty cool....kinda secret ski club like.

When I joined there was still a pic of the "Barking Beaver".

This was back before .. and my original join date was prior to 2000 and there was Pierre eh, Lars, Oboe and ..winter of 1998/1999.  I still have the ski brochure you helped with.

bbinder, there is a thread in the Supporter Lounge about the Barking Leprechauns.   Just pasting "The Barking Leprechauns" in to the search window should take any supporter there.wink.gif  If you're not a supporter, then.. oh welltongue.gif

Going back even farther than crgildart's threads is this rather hilarious explanation for the change (post #2): http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/5545/barking

And then before the forum went totally PC, it went AC/DC.
