We're going to be in Winter Park from 3/26 to 4/1 with our 3 kids (10yo, 7yo and 2yo) staying at Founders Point at the bottom of the mountain. Any recommendations for some good family restaurants? We'll have a car and are willing to drive. Thanks!
Winter Park family restaurant recommendations?
Recommending restaurants in WP is always a bit of a tough one. Not that you can't find a good meal there, but it's hardly a culinary hot spot.
My usual recommendations are:
Mirasol- Tasty tacos with a really nice accoutrement bar.
Timber Line Thai- Limited seating (mostly take out). Surprisingly good Thai selections in Fraser, CO.
The Sushi Bar- Uninspired name, slightly more inspired sushi. That said, they do a decent job.
DiAntonio's- NY thin crust 'za made by New Yorkers. The pizza is so good there that I can not comment on the calzones or pasta dishes,
Fontenot's- New Orleans style fare. It's okay.
Cosmic Dog Burritos- The hot ticket for speedy breakfast burritos. Hot dogs in the PM.
Deno's- European bistro style fare. One of the more complete menus that I've come across in WP.
Devil's Thumb Ranch- I've never dined here but I have friends that go once every trip. Apparently the best food in the area with prices to match. It's a bit of a drive out of town.
I am not a parent and thus, not really in tune with the needs of kids, but I will answer any specific questions to the best of my ability =)
Also, I'll be there for most of your stay. If you'd like a tour of my fave bump and tree lines, give a shout!
Bumpfreaq, thanks for the info. Coming from the Chicago area, we're not really expecting an awesome culinary experience since there's probably only a few ski towns that have food as good as Chicago. We're really just looking for good basic bar/brewery type of fare or Italian that's family friendly. Since we're staying in a condo we'll eat in a few nights but it'll be nice to get out for a couple of dinners as well.
Normally, I'd be all over your offer to tour the mountain but I have 2 major forces working against me. 1st, since this is our family ski trip I'll be skiing mostly with my kids and/or wife. But, probably the more significant issue is that this will be my first real skiing since I had my ACL repaired just over a year ago and medial meniscus removed about 3 months ago. I usually love to ski bumps but I think it would be prudent for me to stay on the greens and blues with my family. My wife has said that me going skiing in my current state of rehab is like a diabetic in a candy store. I've told her that I'm going to pleasantly surprise her so I hope that I can be a husband of my word. Maybe another time when I'm 100%.
Hernandos ... worlds best pizza
Mexican across the road from the Safeway in Fraser ... cannot recall the name but its an orangey colour building
Just came back from a month there ... great food, great locals and a terrific mountain!
Azteca. There's another one in the strip mall across from Hernandos.
IMHO it's not worth a recommendation but if you're in the mood for middle of the road TexMex it's pretty good. Probably should say this is based on just a couple of visits.
Being from Chicago,I never thought I head someone say the world's best pizza is in Winter Park. Maybe we'll give it a try.
Another classic Chicago food in Winter Park. We're going to feel right at home. Someone tell me that there's an Italian beef joint there as well.
