Snowbasin, March 22nd

Reported 8" new but it skied much deeper.  Whole mountain covered with a fairly dense layer of new snow so everywhere was very skiable. Wore my legs out under John Paul!  Had to leave to get to work this afternoon just as the sun was breaking through the clouds :(.

Utah is in excellent shape and the snow cover will last deep into Spring.  Maybe the Bird will make July 4th this year?

Nice, I was hoping (not really expecting) for a Basin TR. Too much work today (yesterday by this point), but I'm heading up tomorrow (there or Powder, not sure yet). Your report is music to my ears.

I kept up with Pow Mow's facebook updates all day yesterday.  It sounded the skiing was awesome after the winds died down and I am sure it the conditions are close to being epic today.

Affirmative. After seeing Pow Mow's 20-inch 48-hour total vs. Snowbasin's 9, it was a no-brainer. And lightning ridge and powder country were closed for most (all?) of the day yesterday, so it was a cheater's powder day. Beautiful conditions--firm, fast snow with untracked lines all over.  Just a little warm and sunny, so it was starting to mush up, but a great day all around.

I'm sooooooooooo jealous!  Powder Country was closed all day yesterday and I am pretty sure Lightning Ridge was as well.

Snowbasin was off the hook yesterday.  It was a day off for me & I was able to ski 43000' vertical yesterday with 13 laps on JP & the rest in Strawberry.  The wind was actually a good thing as it seemed to fill tracks back in on every lap.  Here is a shot of an unknown skier from yesterday:

Today was Bluebird & I got to ski non stop till noon.  Wanted to get some pictures today, but alas the batteries in the camera were dead.  With no gates being open yesterday, it was laps on No Name & outlying areas all morning.  It was definitely getting warm & wet by afternoon.  Tram didn't open till PM.

The weather outlook looks good for more snow through the weekend.

I am just hoping this weather pattern sticks around since I get in to town on April 6th.

That's a pretty impressive vert total, Jim. Wish I was there to share it with you.

Mike,

You probably shouldn't be reading this stuff...  You will at least be back on the bike in no time.

Today was amazing, nuking all day & very few hounds.  Reminded me of why I moved here.

Glad you were reminded, Jim. Hope there's more to enjoy this season, and next!

I was at Pow Mow this past Tuesday and Wednesday as well. Was there Tuesday at 8 am they didn't open until 11 am. Then it was only Hidden Lake lift. They bussed everyone from the main lodge up to the top of Hidden Lake. Wind started to die down and conditions were pretty good I'm guessing about a foot of new snow. Not a lot of people and they opened Paradise around lunch and then Timberline late like 3. All in all not a bad day. Powder Country was closed as was Lighting Ridge. Sundown was open and some folks hiked off the top of that over a bit and got in some good runs.

Wednesday was the ticket though. Vince F. came up and we skied together and we were making first tracks off of the top of Paradise, Sunrise Ridge, and then Cobabe all day until our legs gave out around 2 pm. Well, Vince said he still had some gas...I dunno. We had to start hiking a bit around 11 or so to get to the goods but not real long only like 10 minutes at longest (if that) and it was worth it! Bluebird day, pow pow everywhere, about 30 degrees, no wind, not too many people. One of those days you dream of but rarely get. My last day there and what a way to end the trip! Epic may be an understatement Cstreu.

And the best part was I finally got my powder legs after 3 years of trying! Not sure why but it just sort of clicked. Now I actually know what that feeling of floating is like. Yeah, got a little nervous in the trees but all limbs intact (me and the trees!) Just dropped in and there was at least knee high if not higher powder on all the ridges and just went nutz! Face shots the whole ball of wax.Wow! This is what Vince and I looked like all day..........biggrin.gif   Without doubt my best day of skiing ever. Sorry I am just still so excited that I finally get it!

I did make it to a few other places previous to that and it was good too but nothing like Wednesday. I have to make a special mention of the prime rib lunch special at Snowbasin I had last Friday. Damned good and only $20!  But be warned. Eating prime rib and then going skiing is not recommended, lol! Take it from me.

It looks like much of the same for the next few days.  My mouth starts watering every time I check the forecast.  Just 12 more days.

Lol you nailed it 4ster. Guess you been there, done that, have the t-shirt uh?. I am already trying to figure out a way to get back there one more time in the next week or so. Will have to see what the weather looks like.

Great day at Basin today. 8 inches in the report, was wind-packed into pure Snowbasin velvet--fast but still floaty. I only made it up for a half-day but was still riding fresh lines the entire time. Strawberry, particularly Sisters, had fresh lines galore. Not very crowded at all, only rode with someone on the lift a couple times. Looking like more snow tonight and tomorrow...
