BINDING FOR 2011 GOTAMAS

I demo'd a pair of 178 Gotamas today.  What a ski!  My local shop has a pair at a good price (new).  I asked what binding and they said the Duke but then they realized they were sold out and recommended the Saloman Z12.  I am 5'6" and 155lbs and advanced but not expert.  My carvers are Xwings 170.  My question is are these bindings comparable?  the Markers are almost $200 dollars more. How can that not matter?  Is the Salomon an adequate binding for me, my DIN would be around 8 to 9.

Not sure why they would recommend the Duke when the Baron would do just as well.  The Duke and Baron are quite a bit heavier than the Z12 because they can be used for AT while the Z12 cannot.  If you need or want the AT capability there was no reason to recommend the Z12 and if you don't want or need the AT capability the Marker Griffon would be more appropriate.  I have the Marker Schizo Griffon on my Icelantic Shamans and like the binding a lot.

Thanks.  I saw the Griffon online and the price and appearance is comparable to the Z12.  My question is, in your post you refer to "AT capabilty" what do you mean? (my name is clueless afterall).  Does that mean free heel or telemark skiing or going uphill with skins?

If so, I don't do any of that

He means going uphill with skins.  And if you don't do that, don't buy Dukes or Barons, waste of money.

thanks for clearing that up.  I honestly didn't know how popular AT skiing is.  So, any major difference between the Marker and the Salomon binding?  Reputation, reliability, freedom from popping off when going over a bump?

I have the Marker Griffons on my Gotamas. Seems fitting to have a big beefy binding on a big beefy ski. They have performed superbly for me. The Z12's aren't a "bad" binding, but they would look like a mismatch on that ski. Z12's remind me of rental fare when it comes to quality. They definitely have a cheaper feel to them.

I have the same reaction to the Z12's (and honestly a lot of Salamon bindings)
