I'm taking my family of four on a road trip to Sun Valley next week and I'd prefer to take our "nice car," which is a sedan with good road manners that doesn't normally see ski resort duty. Our "ski car" works great to go to our home resort but is a little too loud, rough, and rumbly for me to want to take it on a 20 hour round trip drive if I don't have to.
Rather than buy a complete roof rack setup just for a single use, my cheap and soft ass has been trying to jimmy rig some way to take four sets of skis in the sedan. What I've come up with is to bungee the skis to one of those Yakima trunk mount bike racks. I would lay the skis transversely across the top of the rack, where the bike top tubes would normally go, then strap everything down. The skis aren't much wider than the car, so hopefully I wouldn't decapitate any pedestrians as I drove by. I think the skis would stay, as long as the edges don't cut through the bungees. I wouldn't be able to lock anything up when we duck into a restaurant for lunch, so I'd take my chances there.
