Width - A Slightly Different Question

post #1 of 2

Up until a year ago or so, my primary ski was a Metron M11.  They were really short at 162, had a width under foot of 76mm IIRC and maybe mid 120's at the tip.  I generally ski the EC, but do make it to Jackson or somewhere in Utah for 1 week/year.  Over the 4 or 5 years I had them, I never once felt I needed more float in powder.  For the last year I've been skiing Sultan 85s in a 172.  Longer, wider under foot and around the same in the tips.  In other words, significantly more surface areas.  I don't consider either ski stiff though the Metrons are softer.  Keep in mind I'm only 150lbs.

I got to sample plenty of powder at Jackson Hole this year.  The Sultans were fine but I couldn't help thinking the whole time how much I wanted another 10mm.  They didn't give me the same float sensation.  Wondering why that is...

width =/= float.

there is a lot more variables than width in play. A lot. At least a dozen.
