free flight anywhere - going to use it to ski next season....

well with air miles i have a free flight anywhere in the world to ski....

i live in scotland so been to europe many times along with skiing in colorado and killington in america... off to val d'isere next week and already had another week in france at new year...

basically what i am thinking is flying to salt lake city hiring a car and then skiing at the various resorts round there... right now this may be by myself if i cant get anyone else to join me... i am a good skier... former racer and can ski anything... just want to do a real powder trip!!!

since there are so many americans on here... do any of you have hints tips etc??? from time of year to do it... what resorts... how many days to take for it etc...

also into the equation i used to race so always wear race boots so was thinking while i was out there to maybe get fitted for a new pair of race boots... currently use Atomic boots and they are now 4 years old... so maybe a good boot fitter in the area for this as there is no one locally here...

Congrats on the ticket.

Fly to Salt Lake City sometime around the 20th of January.  You could spend your whole time just skiing around SLC, but if the weather cooperates take a road trip and come up here to visit us in Jackson Hole.  While you're doing that, you can drive a little further and ski Grand Targhee, Big Sky, and Bridger Bowl.

If you finish your trip by around the 18th-20th of February, you'll miss most of the US holiday crowds and you'll be here during the time that historically offers the best bet for good snow, good temperatures, and minimal crowds.

l think I'd go to Japan and save SLC for when I have to pay for a ticket?

SHREDHEAD's right, it's gotta be Japan. Amazing cultural experience + tons of snow = awesomeness^10.

That's not to say a trip to the US wouldn't be fun. It's just a question of how much fun you want to have (kid in a candy shop situation basically).

Bob Peters is spot on. Get a 4 wheel drive rental because you'll be chasing the snow storms and will want to make it where ever you plan to go. Although Japan would definitely be a sweet choice. The images and videos of skiing in Japan are very impressive.

From Scotland flying to Japan is likely to be more expensive than to SLC. So I would use that ticket to fly to Japan. Try to find buddies from epicski to meet there. We are thinking about Japan for season 2012.

If going to SLC I would follow Bob's advise. Ski Alta/Snowbird, Honeycomb in Solitude and some other resorts. Than travel to WY and ski the resorts Bob Peters advised. Maybe you are lucky and he'll join ya.

Consider a snowmobile tour in Yellowstone NP. We loved it.

In that case, go with the Ski Club of GB on their trip. They did a trip this year, but the price did not include the flight. I'm betting they'll be doing a trip next year, so you use your free flight to get there, then meet up with the rest of them.

That way, you take advantage of your free flight, but you've got a group to travel with, and they'll be doing guided off-piste skiing.
