Do helmets have expiration dates?

How long do they last? I see some for sale from 2007. Is this a problem?

Once dropped or sustained an impact the effectivness is diminished.  Hence if you wear a helmet for safety never buy a used one.  If you wear one for fashion it dont matter.  If it just sat in a box out of the sun, a few years shouldnt matter.

I don't know. Normally manufactures suggest/advice you to change it every 3 years (or after every crash), since materials lose their qualities. I don't really believe this, since helmets need to be done from materials on which sun, sweat etc. doesn't have affect, otherwise they don't get through certification. But on other side, I like my head (empty or not :)) too much, that I would be willing to test this myself. So I change it at least every 3-5 years (if crash doesn't come first).

How big of a crash warrants replacing the helmet?

Last week my helmet fell from a chair onto the floor.  Is that enough to warrant replacement?

Absolutely, you need a new one, preferably Ferrari red.

Yes, the EPS deteriorates. With or without "exposure" to sweat or sun. (It's not hermetically sealed, and certification has nothing to do with chemical lifespan.) Three years is about when change becomes noticeable in terms of transmission of shock, five is probably the outside window before your safety is compromised. (Ever handled old styrofoam?)

I've always wondered why people forget to ask that question when they talk about helmets.

Not unless you want one in Ferrari red.  Usually what I tell people is if you had the same crash (or fall, or whatever) without the helmet on, would you be in hospital/dead?  If the answer is yes, get a new one.

Thanks for the response!

My old helmet was Ferrari red...but it died a rather odd death.  I was getting off of the plane about a year ago, and my bag was in the overhead compartment of the row behind me.  I set the helmet in the seat, twisted to reach my bag, and my knee gave out.  I ended up sitting down onto the helmet very hard, and cracked it.  So, that one I did replace.  Glad to hear I don't have to replace the replacement, too :)
