Hermann Maier was even more dominant than Vonn in his time. What makes Maier even more amazing was winning the overall after his accident. I would say that Maria Riesch is the best in the world this year. Riesch's worst ranking in any discipline this year is 6th (giant slalom). Nobody else on the men's and women's side has a top-10 ranking in every discipline.
I agree with the OP that Vonn is a drama queen, so he/she's not the only one who feels that way. I used to like Vonn up until the 2010 Olympics. She started off complaining about both the course and her leg. After getting bronze, and not gold, in the Super-G, her husband complained that the Austrian coach who set the course conspired to set the gates so that Vonn would lose. Her husband's complaints really turned me off.
Fast forward to this year's world championships. The first thing that she did was post a major complaint about the course on her Facebook page, which didn't exactly endear her to the German and Austrian media. The Facebook post was also sent to local German and Austrian papers. Then she couldn't understand why she was getting bad press. After getting the bad press, there was an article on Eurosport in which Vonn said that she wanted people to like her. She also lost a lot of respect from the Europeans by only skiing the downhill portion of the combined with no intention of skiing the slalom portion. What amazed me about Vonn complaining about the course was that she had been in Europe and knew about the freaky weather conditions in Garmisch. She was lucky that there was any snow to ski on with the warm weather. But even though she felt that the course was unsafe, she still opted to ski on it.
Vonn is also a poor sport and reinforces the stereotype of Americans being poor losers and whiners. When I watched the races in Cortina this season, Vonn finished 3rd in the downhill. Riesch was 1st and Mancuso 2nd. Vonn stood on the podium and pouted almost the whole time. My thought when watching her was, "Lindsey, everyone in this race from 4th place on down would happily trade places with you." She also threw an "f-bomb" when Maria Riesch beat her in the Are Super-G by 0.01 second. At least that's what it looked like on the YouTube video.
As to the relationship between Riesch and Vonn, it appears that there is tension. When Vonn was winning everything, Riesch was the first to congratulate her. Now that Riesch is beating her, Vonn pouts.
