That's not really a bad idea. It does give you a lot of flexibility. There used to be only the Tsaina Lodge up on Thompson pass and it only had a few rooms. Now Rendezvous has 8 more, but most people still stay in Valdez and drive up every clear day.
Standby works good for singles or doubles, but if you have a big group, I wouldn't plan on skiing together all that much. I would probably go later in the season, like late April. Better weather and longer days would definitely help get more runs in. I've skied till 9:30-10 in late April and gotten 13 runs in a day. After 5pm almost everyone bailed for the bar and just a few of us stayed to shralp the gnar.
Your biggest obstacle is weather. If you roll in a the end of a long weather cycle and nobody has used up their vert, it's going to be a lot harder to get on when it clears. Plus, if you're switching ops everyday, they are going to take you on a lot of shakedown runs to see what you are made of and the group dynamics?
Do a search on TGR. There was a TR from a guy that purchased the Costco heli package, which is basically standby. It worked out for him, but I think he was solo or just one other guy.
