Going to Whiteface...

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can give me any pointers at what to expect on Whiteface? Will be there for President's Day weekend... I've done some cross country skiing 20 or so years ago, but only been twice on mountain skis, so not all that much of experience. Should I stick to greens only or are there any easy blues I can venture to as well? Any blues I should definitely stay away from?

Also, I'm not sure yet if I want to have a lesson or not, but if I do, is there someone particular I should get in touch with?

Thank You!

I would hope you take some sort of lesson before you go up any lifts that will get you any appreciable elevation. The trail map shows a low level learning area called mixing bowl, please go to that area and make sure you can control your descent before heading up the mountain. Whiteface has some pretty steep terrain and you want to make sure you don't get in over your head. good luck and have fun.

Snowbowler,

Thanks a lot for replying. Had fun at the mountain this past weekend. Started at the Mixing Bowl as you suggested, but that area was probably meant for people who never been on skis before - very little elevation and extremely short; I was spending more much more time waiting for the ride up, then on the slope so I took Bear lift and did some runs on Bear and Fox trails - these were a bit longer, but had much more elevation. Either can be skied by newbies who already have some experience (though definitely not for first timers). Took a private lesson and went up the Face lift to the middle of the mountain and took green trails down - did only 2 runs there. It's possibly to ski there for beginners as well - a bit more elevation, but trails were fairly wide most of the time. That said, I was glad I had instructor with me on both runs... Next time I'm on the Whiteface, I think I'll start with a couple of Bear/Fox runs as warm up and then up to to the middle of the mountain...

Cheers!

MX22 glad to help. I'm going there this Sunday, how was the holiday crowds? I'm glad you sought out some help. Some people just go right to the top and that is one place where the top is very steep and one can get into trouble real fast.

There were a lot of people on Saturday and Sunday; Monday was really nice however - I think all of the lifts were open and surprisingly not too many people...

This weekend there will be some sort of ski competition, so some trails might be closed.

Cheers!
