Advice on new boots

Thread Starter

I am looking for advice on buying new boots in the off season. I weigh 214 - 6' 1", intermediate / advanced looking to improve. My US shoe size, on a size guide, is a hair over the 11.5 line on one foot and on the line on the other. Width is 104mm. Right now I am skiing any groomed surface while I recover from a knee injury. Hopefully I will be ready for light back country next year.  Recommendations on size, make and model? Thanks

the best advice i can give you on buying boots off season, is to not buy boots in the off season.

can you get a great deal? yes

can you find a great selection? maybe, probably not.

will the ski shop try to fit a square peg into a round hole, because all they have in stock are square pegs? absolutely!!

best of luck to you on your off season search.

are you buying in the off season due to price? or that is the only time you can see a good boot fitter?

if it is price, just go online to any retailer, and search by discount and buy that boot.   It is the best deal, so therefor the best boot.

if off season is the only time you can see a good bootfitter, call ahead and see what selection they have left.   Summer and boots might be in storage already, or with a limited selection they will put you in the best thing they have, but early season they will have more options for you.

There may be some luck involved here. You have a "Good Sized" foot. Meaning not in the meat size for men. There may be some choices for you afterall. Most boot manufacturers make a 104 mm last. You shud call a local shop and ask what brands they carry in a 104 last in a 29.5.

Keep in mind that the stated last width on ski boots is for a size 26 shell and they get roughly 1-2mm wider for each size over 26. IAC, 104 mm is not especially wide for your foot size and I suspect that a boot with a stated 100mm last may be about right. You may also be best served by a 28 rather than a 29.

FWIW and not necessarily applicable to you..............I wear a size 11.5 shoe, measure just at 28.5 on most boot sizers and have a 105mm forefoot width. I ski in a 97mm shell size 27 boot. This is a preference thing and it does take some work to do this. This is probably not the type of fit that you are looking for so don't start wedging yourself into 27's. Just don't be looking at too large of a size.
