What do do after ski-depot "Race Tune"???

Hello,

 

I just got my skis I ordered from ski-depot, with a "Race Tune-GOLD."  The bottoms of the ski have a bunch of wax spread unevenly.

 

Before trying them tomorrow, do I need to scrape them? (and can I do that at room temp?)  And at that point, can I just go, or should I put on a liquid flouro I have?

 

(I don't know much about wax, but I"m watching Youtube videos and trying to learn)

I don't know what ski-depot's race tune gold is, but I sure would scrape that extra wax off the bases.  I would check (if I could) that they sharpened them correctly too.

Yes you should scrape at room temperature.  You need a plastic scraper that's sharp,don't use a metal scraper.  Scrape off as much as you can, then if you have a nice ski brush (nylon, horsehair, brass) brush off the rest.  

 

There are people on here who don't scrape first, say it comes off during the first couple of runs.  I don't agree with that approach.  The idea is to get as much of it off as you can.

 

As to putting liquid flouro on top, it's not necessary.  It will make you glide faster, but not needed.

id just ski them, wax unless its super cold weather wax will work its way off the ski easily enough.

This is bad advice. You need to scrape and brush the skis as mentioned in other posts.

 Unless the original poster specified the CH7 finish option, he will probably want to apply a good all temperature wax (assuming this is a recreational ski application) after scraping off the current wax. It will probably be ok if he doesn't but it is essential to at least scrape and brush. The thick uneven wax left on the ski was for travel protection. I wouldn't want to use a ski in the condition described. You won't get the optimal performance out of the ski and it may actually cause the skis to stick or ski erratically depending on how uneven the wax is distributed.

Thanks for all the replies... I will indeed scrape and brush these tomorrow... probably won't worry about additional coats of waxes until my next NASTAR race this weekend.

Liquid flouro or Cera F only lasts one run, so put it on right before you go.  Make sure your skis is well scrapped, and brush right before you apply the Cera F.  Then apply and cork on the flouro.  Next ski and get first place ski.gif

 

But make sure you don't get any on your ski.  I got a nasty chemical burn from Cera F once.

Hello all,

 

I am the owner / race tune tech at the Ski Depot / RaceSkis.com. I personally tuned and waxed the skis in question.

 

Our race tune consist of a side wall peel, base edge and side bevel set and diamond polish. The skis are then "hot boxed" with Swix Base Prep wax. This wax is "baked" into the skis for 4 hours at 125-130 degrees F and the finish is indeed uneven and not ready to ski. The skis are shipped with the wax unscraped for additional protection during shipping unless otherwise instructed by the customer.

I suggest scraping and brushing before skiing them . . . .

If one does not scape off the excess wax and brush, yes the excess wax will wear off.

 

However, you may not like how your skis behave for the first five or ten runs. I learned this last season when I got lazy. My wife didn't care for the way her skis behaved either. Wax, scrape, brush and everyone is happy.

 ...eventually. But maybe not before the skis need to be waxed again. I've been skiing my friend's skis for a day (he has also himself skied them after waxing) and he's a really lazy scraper. Now they are in the need of waxing, all grey near the edges, but there is still a good amount of excess wax in the middle. The good thing with his wax job was that I was never sliding backwards when waiting for T-bar...

I'm lazy and don't bother with scraping. I do however make sure I wax a very nice, thin, smooth layer onto/into the base. They then don't need scraping. My first run of the day is never my peak of performance anyway and thus I don't particularly care about a modicum of residual wax. Whereas later in the day it matters a lot to me.

Going racing? Then by all means ignore everything I just said and get really anal about a full brush-out, because then it REALLY matters.

Oh, by the way I own a ski repair business, 30+ years at it.

Well, on a powder day I'll be at the bottom after beating you to the untracked freshies and watching you get sloppy seconds. My smile will be bigger than yours. biggrin.gif
 
Scraping and brushing takes little time. Optimize your glide for more fun and better performance the second you touch the snow. Isn't high revs on the meter what this sport is all about......especially after all the other expenses, steps, focus and energy just getting to the snow?
