What's With All This "Black Diamond/Double Black Diamond" Stuff? - Page 3

Yes, I am talking about Spring Mountain.  Those two "trails" out in the woods at the western tip of the property are labeled as "double blacks," at least last time I viewed a trail map.

That's pretty funny.   Anything at Spring Mountain would be the easiest Blue trail here.

Yup.  Laramie Bowl is steeper than Double Blacks at many Vermont resorts.  Even Gros Ventre has some really steep sections.

Alright what the heck, I'll share my memory. When I was growing up, we called them green, intermediate, and blacks.
Interesting. I've usually heard them referred to by color here in the Northeast US, but for some reason that usage annoys me, so for myself, I usually use "beginner", "intermediate", and "advanced"/"expert" (but "double diamond").
I do recall at some point, somewhere, there were double blues.
I remember seeing that on a Jackson Hole map to mean "upper intermediate". I assume it replaced the idiosyncratic wide red rectangle that JH used to use.

The only appropriate use of Blue Diamonds is in a bowl...

...of Lucky Charms.

I was just in Utah and there were some real steep trails marked as double blues. They were steeper than most blacks I ski here in the east.

Probably covering their butt. "Oh you broke your leg on that run? We told you it's expert only."
