Dangit: Delta eliminated the Best Skiing flights DTW to SLC

Just to preface: my schedule is pretty tight so sometimes I can only get out west for 3 days.

Last year you could fly direct to SLC on a 6:35 and be skiing by 10:30 am. After a full day three you had a return flight at 7:15pm.

Now both of those flights are gone and I am SOL as far as getting three days of skiing in three days

Assuming that I only can be away for three days, does anyone have an itinerary that would let me get nearly three full days of big mountain western skiing? I am open to a very late night outbound flight the night before.

Southwest has much better flights to Denver than Salt Lake.

It's not quite as convenient as SLC, but you can be at some pretty good resorts in two hours, great ones in 4?

I just worked this itinerary for some bud's that might come out for Highland's closer.  You could easily change the dates and the fares are reusable if conditions don't look good.

Yes, I considered that exact itinerary for a week later. But I had miles on Delta and with a later flight to SLC worked out to roughly the same amount of skiing time given the closeness to the airport. I really wish Delta still had that early morning flight.

My Delta schedule shows nonstops including an 8:15am arriving at 10:29am, and for afternoon there's a 6:55pm that arrives at 8:59 from DWT to SLC.

Nonstops returning, include a 5:30pm that gets in at 10:31.

I feel your pain.  About 3 years ago Delta cancelled the 6AM direct from Hartford to SLC and back.  Screwed up the annual trip to Alta.  Made the best of it, so now I fly in the night before with a connection, and take the last flight home around 4 PM, arriving midnight.  No loss of skiing but increased doghouse risk (more time away from family).

The only direct option in New England is Boston to SLC and back on Delta.  Far as I can tell the price is always $850+!  Not worth it.

Anyway, have you considered flying in the night before?  That was our call; didn't even consider switching to Denver.

Good luck.

You can't compare an 8:15 am to a 6:35am departing and a 5:10pm to a 7:15pm returning. Those now discontinued flights got you full days of skiing with no extra travel days. I realize it's only  4-5 hours less of skiing, but when you only have three days of someone to watch your kids, that's a lot.

I would but it's a question of how many days we have Grandma to watch the little future skiers. Also, the extra hotel night etc. isn't really worth 3 more hours skiing - unless you know its a powder day ;)
