Ski boot rant....grrrr I want my perfect boots back!

Ok, I am sorry but I am going to cop an attitude here. I usually don't have a rotten attitude, I am usually a pretty friendly easy going fella.

Now however I am pissed.

Here is story, and I am throwing it out to the entire population, real skiers.....like you all.

1989 until now I have lived in boot nirvana. Tecnica TNT Racings began the bliss...306 BSL 26.5 with my custom leather Alpina racing beds hand built for me and only me. Went thru 2 pair of these(at that time I was on the hill over 100 days a year)

Moved onto TNT AVS racing, the tangerine guys.....more perfection. Perfect out of the box bliss....neutral canting, no bootfitting, no heel lifting, no pain = perfection.

1998 moved into my first pair of TNT Explosion 8's 304 BSL, same custom beds - same perfection......eventually pro formed or acquired a total of 4 pair in my quest to make the bliss last forever.

In each of the past 2 years, a pair has blown up and I have come to find that they don't call them explosions for nothing. Now I am down to my last 2 pair, one pair are ok the other pair probably have over 100 days on them.

I have been and continue to be panic struck at the thought of not having the perfect boot anymore. I live a life of fear looking behind me in the lodge half expecting to see the nightmarish trail of orange plastic left behind as my boots break apart.

Recently picked up a pair of near mint Diablo Fires same size and 304 BSL. Ski'd those today and while they were orange (well tangerine) and comfortable and a little soft (set at 100 flex) they did not have anywhere near the same fit! Off to ebay they go! Boo!

I posted here and elsewhere seeking a pair of the last generation Explosion 8 that a fitter friend of mine told me will allow me to continue my bliss (this plea is still in the gear wanted forum and I am going to bump it one last time) I have a ski'd once pair of liners ready to go from the NOS Explosion 8's that broke earlier this season.

The scary thing is he told me that the Explosion 8 was the best fitting boot Tecnica has ever made esp for a normal D width foot like mine.....and he strongly suggested I hunt high and wide for a copper pair or two or I would likely be disappointed with anything else. He said the only thing he could suggest would be a steady diet of bootfitting attempting to make a pair of Tecnica Inferno(98 last vs. 100) fit. Probably run me about 9 bills by the time it was done.

I don't want to downsize, I don't want a blown out race fit, I just want out of the box perfection to continue like I had for over 20 years. I don't want to spend half the ski season seeing the boot doctor nor do I want to spend 3/4 or my limited skiing budget on custom tweaked race boots. I just want to go skiing like I have for 20+ years. Nice warm feet, perfect fit, feeling the edge and riding the wind!

Tecnica bring back the TNT boot last so I can continue my life of boot bliss!!!!!!

That is it for my rant, yep I feel better. Thanks for listening bears!

I guess it is back to looking over my shoulder for the orange plastic trail for me.

Nice warm feet, perfect fit, feeling the edge and riding the wind!

Sounds like Snowboarding to me.

Gee, there was a pair of Explosion 8's at our ski swap this year with a $275 dollar price on them. Your story confirms that people will pay for this boot. II would like to think there is something out there that gets close.

Roundturns, closest fit I have found is Salomon Impact 10.....not the same but in the ballpark hopefully ok out of the box. I have a normal freaking foot, why shouldn't there be something that isn't just close but

exactly the same????

If I can't find a couple pair of copper TNT Explosion 8's I might have to pull the trigger on those......huge bucks tho more than I can afford but maybe that is how it will have to go!

Just put the 304 Diablo Fire's on ebay....very, very disappointed.....bye bye pretty tangerine booties,

Thanks mntlion, I made the guy an offer on the first one.....I was hoping for something in a little better shape but those are the ones, copper with square buckles.

The impact 10 was closer in fit to the Explosions than any of the subsequent Tecnica models I have tried on.....

Any other suggestions on a boot that fits exactly the same requiring no modifications?

Why did Tecnica change the TNT last to something else?

good luck with the ebay auction. if it doesn't work out or if you'd like to try and find an alternative i'd like to suggest the nordica speedmachine 110.

Thanks for the tip.....owned Nordi 981's in the past and they were 98 last or narrower pain machines.....I have heard the speedmachine is 100 last and 110 is the lowest flex I can go....will see if I can find a pair to try.

Thanks again!!

oh yeah the 981's were the worst boots i ever had. the shop convinced me they'd stretch and i needed a tight fit with my toes up front for performance. i got them after my second pair of rear entry, wax bladder molded to your foot hanson's foam rubber liner fell apart. hansons were no longer being made and i didn't know any better, thought that was how a four buckle overlap fit. the 981's squeezed my big and little toes, took them back for work twice then gave up on them.

needles to say i was reluctant to try another nordica but to my surprise the speedmachine 110 fit right out of the box. they are a 100mm last but i think nordica got the shape right. i tried 102 and wider which still didn't fit my toes and were too wide everywhere else, probably made for people with bunions or the super size me set. I have square toes (think vibram finger shoes), and a narrow heel/ankle area. can't say i tried everything, did try allot and these were the only ones that fit without pushing on my big, little or both toes.

Nordi 981s?   Those goofy things with the slide-up contrasting-color external spoiler?

UGH yuck!   I went from those to a SanMarco ZX (still a kludge) and praised the gods for relief.

Ha ha, once I found Tecnica those pups went in the junk heap!

Paul,

I found true happiness in a pair of XT 17's and always said that Technica must have stole into my bedroom one night and measured my foot as the prototype for their last. No matter how wonderful they fit with a Doberman lace up liner, I could not ignore the pain at the end of every ski outing as my feet thawed out. And once the duct tape on the shell seam wore out and no longer kept only 50% of the snow out of the shell, I went looking. Went to the other side - Dalbello Krytpon Pro with Intuition PowerWrap. Never go it right. Shells not good fit for me. Liners even worse.

Saw a pair of '09 Nordica Doberman 130's at Ski Depot so went over to try them. Blisssss out of the box. Been in those without any modifications for two years - with the old leather lace ups. Are they warm. Not so much, but really not bad with Chilly's Ultra light. I think warmth is as much a function of circulation as insulation. But an amazing fit, feel and connection with the snow. So damn light feeling. Sometimes I forget to unbuckle them at lunch. You and I have the same size foot, and probably the same shape since Tecnica's worked so well for you too.

So, see if you can find a pair of the Doberman's. You may just fall in love again. If not, my old XT 17's are yours for the asking.

Hey thanks David, I have rec'd a couple of PM's from members suggesting speedmachine 120's and dobermann's. but none of the local shops carrry high performance Nordica products, only 100 flex and lower.

The closest fit I have found yet to the explosion 8 (100 last) is the Salomon Impact 10.....but would it pass the perfection test on the hill?  That is a very tricky question.

Recently picked up a pair of Tecnica Diablos mint thinking I could cheap out....nope.....different last - no good.

What remains the unanswered mystery to me is why did Tecnica change perfection......????

I may go out today and hit a few shops continuing the quest....

(but the quest would end immediately if somebody could pony up a nice pair of the copper colored explosion 8 shells I am seeking in the other thread in a 304 bslcool.gif)
