Race Report

So my youngest daughter Alexandra (6) started racing this year as part of Team Summit J-7 girls coached by our very own COSkiGirl!

She had great first race day at Breckenridge a few weeks and got a 2nd and 6th in her first 2 races.    On 1/30/11 she and I Ioaded up and headed over Fremont Pass to Ski Cooper for her 2nd set of races.  She headed off with Coach Kristen for the day and I headed off to do a little skiing around before the races started at 10am.  I came over to the the top of the race course around 9:45 and found quite a scene.   Coach Kristen was yelling at me to check out my little one as Alex and her friends raced toward me.  Apparently she had taken quite a tumble in one of her warm up runs.  Alex ran up and pulled up her goggles crying and what do I see?

A real nice shiner!!!

She had somehow managed to smash herself in the face/eye with her ski pole in a tumbleeek.gif

I got her to calm down and asked if she wanted to still race....of course she didyahoo.gif

She made her first run and I checked out her time and she wasn't placed very highly so we shrugged it off and said hey she had fun and she stuck to it even after a nasty crash.  She had rough time after that as dad forgot to put her toe warmers in her boots and her feet were freezing so she started crying again.  We got her in the lodge and put in some toe warmers and had some lunch.  She was super whiny and ready to quit and I said if you want to go home and skip the 2nd race that's okay.   I started packing up to go and she came up and told me she had changed her mind and would do the 2nd race as long as I would ski a few runs with her and her group.  Out we went for the race and few runs.  I didn't pay any attention to the times on the board in the afternoon race.  She did her race and then I took off and skied around behind her and teammates for the rest of the afternoon.

Here is a video of Alex hitting the jump in the upper section of the course on the afternoon run.

After the race we headed to the awards ceremony and she got ribbon for 6th place on the morning run.  Her good friend Talisa got the bronze medal for the morning runyahoo.gif so they were celebrating and playing around as they announced all the other age class awards.  They finished the morning awards and started announcing the afternoon runs and lo and behold they announced Alex as they winner!!  She got to climb up on the podium and get her gold medal!!

Last night we looked up the results on live timing and they gave us the medal erroneouslyredface.gif    Looks like they somehow mixed up the bib numbers and start positions on the 2nd race.  Oh well she didn't win but more importantly she didn't quit!!   I couldn't be more proud of her little 6 year old perserverance.

I feel bad for the little girl who actually did win and didn't get to climb the podium or get her medal even if she is a little Ski Club Vail bratwink.gif

Congrats, Dave.  You are a proud Papa and you should be.  What did mom say when she saw the carnage?

Very cool.  I loved seeing little kids, especially girls, get involved in racing of any kind.

I sent her a pic early on and she started crying.  She said she was glad that I was there instead of her...

I'm looking to buy a CO-Motion Periscope tandem to get my older one (8yo) into riding with me....maybe she can come close to living up to little Miss Roadrash's standardseek.gif
