The Canyons, Snowbasin and Powder Mountain - Jan 25-30 Trip Report

Just back from 5 days in the North Wasatch, great sunny weather and BIG stashes of POW at The Canyons, Snowbasin and Powder Mountain.

Got in from West Palm tuesday afternoon and met fellow Bear,  Rich Getz..I don't know his handle, but have known him for 27 years.

With our Park City "freebie" tix in hand we meet up with fellow easterner Chris from VT, a Pet Vet and his squeeze.

He had been on vaca for 6 days and showed us the POW up on 99,90. Great first turns for me, just where I needed to be in the flat light conditions.

Off to SLC to pick up late arriving Chet the Jet, and off to Ogden we go. We call it Hogden cause we are the Hog Squad!

Next three days are spent at Snowbasin shooting lots of video and skiing are ARSSSes Off!!!

Can you say Hell's Canyon? Three 50-somethings survived to ski it three times in two days.

Sunny skies and near 32 degree temps kept the snow just right. It is true what they say about this place. no body is here and the snow knows it. It hadn't snowed since early tuesday and we had freshies and leftovers for five days.

Powder Mountain is, in a word, a playground. Snow Country freshies on saturday three tines, Snow Country picnic and last snowcat of the day to Lightning Ridge made for a great last day for me.

Best T-shirt I've seen lately: "SL,UT". Wish I had thought of it!

I need to resize some pics for posting. I'll get some up shortly.

icon14.gif Glad you had a good time!

That OB canyon you referred to is rarely a safe place to be.

Thanks,

JF

That camera attached to your ski ?? is very, very cool. And you got bluebird skies throughout!! nice.

Sister's Bowl, I think 4ster took me there as we entered the bowl in WFO and came down parts in between WFO and Anytime, it was steep, steep and harder than steel...4ster can pipoint it. We had a blast (once I survived it!). You had the conditions.

Wonder how the video appears when pointed downhill, post some of that too if you have some clips. Thanks

We entered lower down as the top was closed due to the slippery conditions, but the same general area.

Guys, Sister's was a mixed bag of great leftover pow to frozen avi rubble, and i think everything in between. One section I'm rippin' through shows crust flying off screen......my new avatar!

Shot about 8 gigs, mostly from the helmet cam. Had to learn on the fly about fogging, and how to beat it. I do have about 25 minutes of the top of No Name going into Hell's.......

we go right by the Avi Blower on the trip across. I will need to find the time to edit that.

As far as the ski mount goes, it just came to me. It did fail when I cut through some avi rubble, but my buds went nutz when they saw the vid. That ski has Railflex bindings so I am drilling the Mojos for a more solid mount. Very damp ski and bindings adjust to any boot.......Think I should charge admission? ha-ha

Its sounds like your trip was as good as mine.  After my trip out there last week I think Pow Mow is now one of my favorite places to go.

Definitely on my top-5 list. Did the Powder Country bus three times, nailed the pick-up spot from both sides of the rode.

Snowbasin is a notch better, 5 Stars for nasty terrain, and lines all over the place. It was good to have our guide Rich who has been skiing there since '06.

I stuck to Powder Country and Lightning Ridge the entire time I was there.  I kept telling myself I was going to hit some of the steeps off of Paradise but just never got around to it.

Yep, it does ski well in the sun, just look for the right exposures and rip it.

Last run of the day, and off the Cat, was Carpe Diem, and it still had freshies and lightly tracked .

Condos we found out are very reasonable there......don't tell anyone!

Interesting perspective from the wide angle lens mounted up on you ski. Hope you plan to post up some more video when you're done with your edits.

Looks like the Hogs had a grand time tearing up the trough.

Smore pics. And yes on the ski cam, but that won't happen 'til April. Just used Marine Goop on the GoPro mount to the ski, hoping some time in the soFLA sun will help it cure.
