Whiteface in the Spring?

I'm thinking of doing a big trip this year with some friends and cousins, and we were throwing around the idea of Lake Placid in April, so that the non-skiers/snowboarders have some fun stuff to do in town while we're up at Whiteface.

I've been to Whiteface in January a few times (when it really is Iceface!), but I've never been there in the spring. What're conditions like? Milder, or still quite brutal? And the snow?

Spring is my favorite time to ski Whiteface (late March, early April).  Conditions are not brutal.  Amt. of snow will depend on what fell this winter + what was made.

If we get good natural snow, the slides might be open (they were last year).  I haven't been up yet this winter (I've stuck to Gore so far), so I can't offer a guesstimation on whether the slides are likely to open.  I'm sure there are others who can.

Thanks, STE, sounds promising. Looks like Whiteface has gotten 83" so far this year, on a good track to beat last year. I'll probably try to convince everyone that heading up there is a good idea. Anyone else have Springface experience?

What is ot like there generally for challenging skiing?

WHITEFACE IS A MONSTAR!!!!! It is one of a hand full of places that have held the Olympics more then once I have had the good fortune to call that my home mountain this year.  It's been amazing!!  I have skied(i like to say rode) that place for the past 4 years and I have not seen it better then it is right now.  They have been getting good drops of snow.  A few inches here and there, and last week (feb 6) the got close to 30 inches in a week.  With the final pwderday being sun which i happen to have been a part of. That place is amazing.  Steep if u want rolling gentle cruisers.  I found some  crazy terrain too.  We took the Wilmington trail on top of Lookout Mtn.  It is really the best cruiser of any mtn in the east.  We took a right on the diamond Lookout Below, we slowed long enough to read "WARNING UNGROOMED TRAIL" on the sign before bombing ahead.  at the point of no return, we surveyed the land.  It was an ungroomed trail, COMPLETELY UNGROOMED for the entire season!!!!  Huge whales of man made snow in monster  piles on either side of a narrow steep.  Challenging but not impossible.  It was amazing.  Spring this year will be a banner time to go there.  Whiteface is way more hospitable when it is warm out, altho I know u could find somthing there to raise the pulse.  I love it and I hope to get back there this season!!
