2010 Peak 88's vs. Elan 888's

It's time to downsize.  I need less ski than my current daily driver-- the biggest model of Head Monster 82's.

Since I'm thrifty and want the dampest ski I can get, my choice has been pared down to either the 2010 Peak 88's (180mm), or Elan 888's (177mm).

Questions for those who've skied them:

1) which feels damper? (hell, I even loved the dampest skis ever made, the all-stainless volants)

2) which has better edge grip?

3) which is softer?

Haven't skied the Peak 88 since they softened things up (used to own both the iM82 and the iM88). But the 888's are a great ski. Close call on dampness, probably the Peak 88, 888's have better grip and in general are a higher performing ski, Peak 88 is softer. Wash in soft snow. Or wait 6 weeks and get a pair of Apex's for the same price, even better. For me, slam dunk for the Elans, but you sound like you don't just want a shorter ski, you want a more forgiving ski. In which case the Peak 88's.

I am pretty sure the Peak 88 doesn't come in 180cm. It does come in 177cm (we have a pair on closeout for $349, if interested). 888 is quite a bit stiffer, more GS feeling, more of a power crudbuster.  Peak 88 is better at slower speeds, in mid-speed bumps (the tip is softer), not quite as stable.  It also feels more forgiving.  The 888 wants to be skied faster; it is laterally stiffer, by quite a bit.

Checking the Head pdf of their lineup from 2010, the Peak 88 came with a new length 180cm, added to the previous Monster 88 lengths of 164, 175 and 186.  (I've complained here before about the 175's being too short and the 186 is too much ski.)

If that's what you've got, sign me up.  I'll call Village with a credit card #.

yeah, you are right!  Sorry, that was the iM82 and 78 I was confused with.  We have the 180cm at the shop.  Feel free to call us tomorrow. Glad to help.
