Question for Patrollers

At Hunter on 1/20, a skier ran into a fence so hard that he broke it, with his head; he remained unconscious at the base of the fence until the patrollers arrived.  When they did, they wrapped him in a yellow tarp, like a shroud, no part of his face or body showing, and sledded him down the mountain.

Is that how you wrap a body? Does this mean that he was dead?

A lot of patrols use a yellow tarp to protect all their toboggan transport patients:

No.

The toboggan we use at Hunter comes with a yellow bag that wraps the patient for warmth on the ride down. When it's cold, every patient, regardless of injury, gets wrapped in that bag for the ride down.

Since posting that I've seen a number of people with very minor injuries being bagged and dragged, the same way, so my question was answered.
There wasn't any shroud over me the last time I rode down, decades ago...

Well,

It keeps a patient (regardless of injury) warmer and drier on the way down.

Also, most loaded sleds come with blankets and tarps already on them...if you don't tie them down, they flap all over and will get caught under the toboggan, etc.  The best way to tie them down is around the patient (who gets the added benefits of warmth and protection from the elements).

We have a few 'empty' sleds that we'll throw a blanket and a quick splint in for a transport of an injured leg if we're sure that's all we're dealing with.  But every mountain has different protocol.
