Great Skiing for former or current racers

Pros: Best Variety of Runs near the Twin Cities

Cons: The drive

Welch's fall lines have the most variety of any ski area within 2 hours of the Twin Cities.   The best value for a season pass near the Twin Cities.   Best place to race in Minnesota, or for former racers to just have fun skiing.   It's still a small area, but it's the best near the Twin Cities, for what that's worth.   Good grooming, although they probably need to groom a little more often than they do.   More black runs, than most places have runs total, and many of the blues are better than any blacks at any area within two hours drive.  Best chalet in the area, best food, the bar at Mad Jax is nice, but caters to more of a dive bar...

Welch SUCKS!!!!!!!

Pros: NONE

Cons: Too much to list

Wow! where do I start with this dumb place. Badly goomed trails. Icy! Icy! Icy! WAY over priced for what you get. Terrain park....who the build a terrian park on flat ground with no speed to hit it? Why? dumb park crew is all I have to say. Nothing nice to say about this place. Went to the bar and waited for a long time for the bartender to service me. Why? cause he's busy talkin' to another co worker and me as a customer can wait. Not just this one time..but everytime I went there. Ordered a cheese burger and got my order after everybody in my crew who ordered after me. I had to go back to get my order in again. Do not recommend this place to anyone. By far nothing compare to...

near the top in the TC

Pros: larger athen the rest, cheaper, the best race courses in the twin cities

Cons: often busy on the green side, not utah

The previous review is very useful. Night skiing here isn't as gfood as afton who has better lightening, but a good place to go and ski with some variety. However, their "back bowl" is nothing more than a few straight runs with no place oto turn. If that's your thing, go for it, but it is mightly boring besides the funnel into the lift, which usually has enough yard sales, and people inching downward to make it completely hazardeous, not because one would fall, but because its easy to run someone over."Double black?" no way... not even close to "black" out west. But thats what the system is for. Enjoy!

Had a great time at Welch Village

Pros: Instructors, varried terrain, relatively quick lifts, freindly staff

Cons: Snow conditions, but that is not their fault.

I have never been to Afton, but after reading the reviews and talking to all the locals when I was in Minneapolis, Welch is the best choice in Minnesota and if you are going to ski the whole day they are also the cheapest. Welch offers many different types of terrain and sports the only double black diamond in the area (East, not West, coast level).  They use two faces of the "mountain" and even have a back bowl.  The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the instructors are the bees knees!I took some private lessons with Gary (aka "wolfman" from his days at Wolf Creek) and all I can say is WOW.  They guy was very good and extremely friendly.  He took my friend, who has NEVER skied...
