Pros: Tackles even the psycology of overcoming fear on steeps.
Cons: A companion DVD is about the only thing missing.
I own this book from Human Kinetics in Champaign IL. I’ve read several books on skiing. But, this one is my current favorite. There must be about a hundred these time lapsed sequenced shots in the book like on the cover. The cool part is that Ron Lemaster does an excellent job of describing the physics of what’s going on in each sequence and recreating the thought process that’s going on at each stage of the maneuver.
There is an excellent chapter on the many aspects of proper boot fitting complete with pictures.
My favorite chapter is one on skiing steeps. I mean the western double black type steeps with the “No Fall Zones” at the top. A ‘No Fall Zone’ means ‘you fall, you die’. This is the first book I’ve read that takes on the topic of overcoming the gut wrenching fear steeps produce.
Human Kinetics has hit another home run with Ultimate Skiing. I also own a copy of their SKIING. They are both excellent resources and well worth reading. If I had to recommend only one of them, I would recommend getting both of them one at a time starting with Ultimate Skiing.
