The Canyons quickly changed for the better since it was purchased by Talikster.  Iron Mountain has opened, additional restaurants have opened, the base of the gondola has moved in front of the Cabriolet lift, and a new Orange Bubble chair was installed to alleviate traffic at the bottom of the mountain.  A mile long terrain park was added, too.  Wow.  The lodging options all fall in the upscale to luxurious category, with many offering the ability to ski in/ski out. The Waldorf was recently listed as a top 5 hotel in the country.  The resort cracked the top ten for SKI Magazine's annual overall award, with high marks for service, lift access, food, and the terrain park(s).

 

The Canyons comprises nine mountains of varying terrain.  One option is to figure out where you want to ski, and then ski on that side of the resort for half the day before moving on. The other option is to try to ski it all--you really can't--but it is fun trying.   It is best to spend at least two days there, since there is a lot of distance to cover when attempting to ski the entire resort in one day.

 

There are great runs there most visitors will unknowingly ski past (e.g., Grande into Pinball Alley). In fact, most experts will go to 9990 skiing past some great runs.  I suggest asking locals or the ski patrol where to find the fun stuff.  Also, check for avalanche blasting before starting out on deeper powder mornings.  Have a “Plan B” in place in case your favorite lift is opening late due to avalanche control.

 

My kids have taken lessons there, and that is my only experience with the ski school.  The class sizes are generally small and the instructors are highly competent. 

 

There are various dining options in the village at the base and in the surrounding hotels/condos that range from casual fare to the finest cuisine in Utah.  Most people will also want to spend time dining and shopping in Park City, a short drive away.  A shuttle bus regularly runs to take people without other transportation.

 

The Olympic Park (bobsled, luge, jumping, & freestyle activities) and the Alf Engen Museum are close by, and well worth a visit.

Cons: None!

I always hear people complain about the Canyons layout, but if you just plan your run first, it is no big deal.  Some great terrain on 9990 - nice steeps and moguls.  Great if you get a lot of snow, but the lower parts of the mountain aren't always in great shape.  Overall, I loved the mountain.

Cons: Limited beginner terrain, kids ski school is dismal

Canyons is a large resort with plenty of acres for skiers to spread out.  We were there during spring break season in the  2nd week of March and expected crowds but amazingly had almost no lift lines.  Even the Tombstone lift which is essential for getting places on the mountain did not have any lines.  There is some nice expert terrain off the highest point from the Ninety-Nine-90 chair, with different options for descent.  The narrow mogulled path leading to the “easiest way down” may freak out some intermediate and advanced skiers, so don’t go up there unless you are used to skiing expert terrain; Red Pine Bowl and Lower East Face have some steep sections that have a backcountry feel, and were my favorite part of the mountain.  Sidewinder and Cloud9 are good runs to warm up on if you like steeper intermediate runs or are waiting for the off-piste to soften up.  The Dreamcatcher basin on the far left of the mountain is the first to get the morning sun so is a good place to start the day and then work your way across the mountain; Fools Paradise is fun for expert skiers.  Gallery and Shadows, off of Elk ridge hold good snow and are nice glades to ski.  Did not make it to Super Condor Express but looks like it has some nice terrain. 

 

There is very little beginner terrain at Canyons so if you have young kids or beginners in your group I would go to Deer Valley or PCMR instead.  The kids ski school was very disappointing, there is very limited terrain for teaching and my son was very bored as they kept his group on the same green run all day; they have no fun trails and adventure zones for kids like they have at PCMR & Deer Valley.  The quality of instruction was also not very good for what they charge.  If your kids are comfortable with intermediate slopes you can ski with them and find plenty to do at Canyons but don’t put them in ski school.

It's a huge area, lots of great varries terrain for just about any skier. The focus seems to be cruiser type runs and plenty of mellow glades. So there is a bit less offerings for the true expert. But still plenty of challenge to be had on 9990 and elsewhere.

 

 

Its UT so snow is always going to be pretty good even though the resort is mostly east facing. Just ski the trees or find a bit more northerly aspect if you want softer snow. There is plenty to go around.

 

 

The rap on the resort is that its ahrd to get around. IT is true the place is huge and sprawly, but the lift system is pretty good. Once you get to redpine, it is fairly easy to move around and get to where you want to go.

 

 

I think most hard core skiers will rank it behind resorts like Snowbird, Snowbasin, and Alta, but its still got a lot to offer and I like it better than the resorts in PC and BCC.

Once a little known ski area geared to the needs and budgets of locals, the Canyons has been transformed into the largest combination ski/snowboard resort in Utah. Among the newer terrain, 9990 is considered the peak for experts while Dreamcatcher, Dreamscape and Iron Mountain offer plentiful intermediate and advanced terrain. The resort ranked 10th in SKI Magazine's Overall rankings for the 2012-2013 season (Oct. 15 issue), with high marks for access, food and lodging. The area has everything: 4000 skiable acres comprising 182 trails, 9 peaks, 5 bowls, 6 natural half-pipes, 2 terrain parks (one is over a mile long), chutes, tree skiing, bumps and (of course) powder. Excellent backcountry terrain is also accessible from the summit. The Canyons boasts 19 lifts and 182 trails. The world-class resort includes 15 dining venues, 5 diverse lodging properties and two state-of-the-art spas. Several major improvements were announced for the 2010-2011 ski season, including moving the gondola base to a more optimal location, adding a new heated high speed bubble chair next to the Grand Summit Hotel, adding a European-styled "Ski Beach," expanding the snow making, and opening Iron Mountain with 300 additional acres of skiing. From the Salt Lake City Airport

Take I-80 East through Salt Lake City. ( I-80 merges with I-15 )You will now follow I-80 East for about 15 – 20 minutes and take Exit #145 Kimball Junction / Park City.  This exit is the main road that enters Park City and The Canyons. You will be on SR-224.  Follow 224 for two miles from the exit and take a right at the stop light on to The Canyons Resort Drive.  Continue a short distance up to The Canyons.  Day Skiers: Turn left just past the 7-Eleven and park in the Cabriolet parking lot and ride the Cabriolet into the village.  Resort lodging guests: Follow The Canyons Resort Drive to your destination.

The Canyons marks one of the largest resort re-creation projects in the history of the resort.  $50 million was spent  re-aligning the gondola, installing a state-of-the-art quad that has heated seats, adding 300 acres of terrain on Iron Mountain, adding restaurants, designing a ski beach at the base, and adding a 20 million gallon snowmaking pond.
