I went to sugarloaf this past weekend and I loved it! The ice was delightfull and only punctuated by a few rocks. Occasionally, we would hit a few patches of snow but we didnt let it bother us too much. We were delighted by the cheerful antique lifts which we had a long time to admire since they were so slow.
There was also a fantastic mudpit called the "parking area" from which we had to carry our gear about 1/4 mile, allowing us to be properly warmed up for our ice skating and lift watching.
If it wasnt for the rather posh accomodations, it would have been a completely uniform experience.
I warmly recommend this delightful ski area for masochists and those who feel they dont have enough frustration in their lives.

Sugarloaf would get a 4 or 5 stars from me, had it not been for its expensive lodgings. However, we discovered the Herbert Hotel in Kingfield (15 minute drive to Sugarloaf). It is a beautiful historic hotel with clean pretty rooms, and helpful staff. It is not the posh accomodations on the mountain, but the rooms are very pretty, and you cannot beat the value of staying there.
Steep mountain. If you want a challenge this is where you go. From the powder feilds to the just plain steep terrain that litters the mountain. Sugarlaof is amazing and its a must ski on the east coast. Also the variety of tree skiing is unmatched. If your looking for a challenge make sure you go here.
We were impressed by the mountain as we were driving into Sugarloaf and excited about our week vacation. The first two days were great spring riding and actually tried the black and double black trails. However, the thing we noticed were the very few snow guns. We heard that $5 million was spent towards snowmaking. Unfortunately we didn't see much of that and it showed later in the week. Towards the end of the week a lot of the lifts were closed and they were still trying to groom mid morning. I'm sure this would be a great place to ride but only if there is actual snow to ride on and not ice.
