Ski Whitecap Mountain
Description:

Pushed higher than the Rockies long before the Himalayas and Lake Superior were formed, the Penokees stand in testimony to the earths violent past. These ancient mountains, on which The Whitecap Mountains Resort is built, will hold you spellbound. Whitecap Mountain is Wisconsin's largest ski resort. Take a schuss down into the land of the Grindelwald or dance playfully over the bumps of Kilimanjaro. SKI Magazine reports, "...among the Midwest ski resorts the Whitecap terrain and trail system is most like the mountains." Whitecap truly offers a "western mountains" skiing experience at a fraction of the cost.

Pros: Natural Beauty, Amble Snow, Steeps, No Crowds

Cons: Basic infrastructure, long drive

Arguably, this is the best overall ski area in the whole Midwest.  Boyne has the best groomers, Lutsen the longest runs, Bohemia the steepest.  Whitecap isn’t the best at any one thing but is close to the best in each of these categories:

  • 200” of snow means powder days are common
  • Great natural beauty with runs winding through the woods and 3 individual peaks
  • Steepest runs only surpassed at Bohemia
  • Long groomed runs
  • 4 great additional ski areas nearby to explorer (Indianhead, Big Powderhorn, Black Jack and Porkies)

Expect a very basic lodge.  It kind of feel like the whole place hasn't had significant investment since the 70's.  Everything works but nothing is fancy.

Pros: very varied aspects of mountain

Cons: difficult to ski to car

I enjoyed a nice afternoon getting lost on their several peaks.
Very disorienting Resort.   I escaped to write this review!!
It's a funky little place, certain to be crowded on weekends.
