Fun Mountain for Old Experts


Pros: Long season, consistent snowfall, affordable season pass, low crowds, sufficient challenge

Cons: lift layout, thick woods of spindly trees, ski shredding tailings if exposed

The gondola ride is definitely an issue, but it's either ride or drive (which you can't do anymore).  The drive took 30 minutes alone from Kellogg (town down below) on a good day to the lodge during the Silverhorn days (after Jackass).  In fact, back in the mid 80s, Kellogg was an 1.5 hour drive from Spokane, and another 30 winding up the hill.  Later, in the late 80s or early 90s, Duane Hagadone (rich developer) created Silver Mountain resort, and added four chair lifts that basically opened up two north facing basins.  Hagadone also added the gondola, now a 20 minute ride from the Interstate to mid-mountain.  Since then, I-90's been completed...

Pros: accesability, variety of terrain, snow quality, small crowds

Cons: accesability

Silver Mt. was originally Jackass Ski Bowl for many years, any ski area willing to name itself that has a scene of humor.  Well worth a day to ski or more.  It is one of the other areas in the Inland Northwest, Schweitzer being the centerpiece, and that is a great thing for Silver MT skiers.  Weekday crowds are pretty non-existent. Great access.  You go East over one low pass, 4th of July, from Cd'A, ID about 35 miles to Kellogg, park in a paved lot walk across the street to the base and catch one of the worlds longest gondolas which deposits you at mid-mountain.  Do not think I ever had to chain up or had a problem getting there.  If there is too much wind or mechanical problems with the...
