Shanty Creek Reviews

Good Michigan Ski Area

Pros: Good Run Variety, Solid Black Runs

Cons: Better Skiing Just Slightly North

Schuss Mountain is a top ten Michigan ski area.  The five main lifts have a good combination of all ski run types with good run length.  Lifts are fixed a little slow but have short lines.  There are taller and bigger ski areas in Michigan but Schuss isn’t that far off.

Great midwest resort

Pros: Varied terain

I went to Shanty Creek in February 2012 with my family.  We really liked Schuss Mountain.  It had a nice mix of beginner and expert terrain.  We especially liked the red lift area which is heavily wooded.  We actually stayed at Summitt mountain which was quite a bit smaller, but the hotel we stayed at had a free shuttle to Schuss, about a 5 minute ride.  My son liked the monster terrain park at the purple lift.  We plan on going back in the near future !

Favorite Midwest Ski Hill

Pros: Ski In/Out Condos

Cons: Typical Midwest Short Runs

Shanty has a bunch of slope side ski in ski out condos and hotel style rooms. I love walking 20 feet out the door and clicking into my bindings. The skiing is typical Midwest 500' elevation runs that you can do in one breath if you really want to bomb it.   I've been to a dozen different Learn To ski and Carnival weekends there. And they always come up with great bands for reception parties, ones that play everything but wedding reception fodder.   The heated pool and hot tub are very nice, and they have a very nice spacious lodge where all the indoor stuff happens.     Over the years they have added several new runs and lifts on the back side of the...

Boyne Country skiing on the cheap

Pros: good value, not usually crowded, less expensive than it's peer hills

Cons: snow quality can be spotty

Schuss Mountain / Shanty Creek is really two resorts about 5 miles apart. Shuttle busses connect the two, but most people just pick one or the other for the day. Schuss Mountain is the larger of the two and has terrain as good as any of the lower peninsula resorts.  Shanty Creek is much smaller and geared more towards families and beginners but since it's sited at the big convention center / golf course there are more amenities there. If you're looking to ski "Boyne Country" and don't want to pay top dollar or deal with the crowds, Schuss is a very good choice.  They seem to get more snow in Mancelona than further north, so the snow is plentiful.  But Schuss doesn't...
