Pros: inexpensive, lightweight, small, easy to use
Cons: single antenna only
I bought four Freerides for my wife and kids to use while skiing in-bounds on avalanche danger days. Given the intended use -- inbounds, where patrollers can find them, and without shovels and probe -- they're a darned good solution. And they've gotten the kids interested in playing with search capabilities, which is a good start too.
The beacon actually does surprisingly well in search mode. Not as many features as my Pieps DSP, to be sure, but surprisingly accurate. Still, I bought this for people who ski without a shovel and probe, so that's not my primary concern.
