Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie High Country is cradled between the Ohau Range to the west in the Main Divide and the Ben Ohau range to the east. In summer it is endowed with fine weather and long daylight hours and in winter with reliable snow. Ohau Snow Fields is all about fun and friendliness where people are important. Being a smaller area you get to know the people on the hill. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere in the Day Lodge is one of community. Having skied down to the chair lift from the car park the "bottom lifty" will advise you where the best runs are and then he will be checking on your next run to see if he was right. The Day Lodge on the mountain has a log burner, a deck to admire the panorama, great food and espresso coffee.

Pros: Great terrain if you hike a little, quiet, friendly atmosphere, great lodge

Cons: Slow chairlift, variable snow

Ohau is the perfect stop over if you are on your way to Queenstown from Christchurch or vice versa. It has tremendous views and offers some great skiing especially if you put a little effort in and hike to the top ridge, about 20 minutes. The Lodge at the bottom of the hill is a lot of fun and the mountain rarely gets crowded. If you can find a local to take you through Hemi's bowl then you are in luck, on its day one of the best runs in New Zealand, and well worth the hike.
