Best in the Detroit area


Pros: It's close, not too expensive, and well run

Cons: it's a manmade hill next to a gravel pit with not much vertical

There are four ski hills in the greater Detroit area.  None of them are anything to write home about, but they're here and I'm very glad that they are.  For getting in some turns after work, or learning how to ski it's great to have these little hills nearby. Mt. Holly is  the best of a mediocre lot.  It has the most vertical, the most area, the best snowmaking/grooming and the best maintained lifts of the four. (even a high-speed lift, highly unusual for such a small hill.)  There's a nice beginner area and the blue runs are pretty tame so it's great for families or those just starting out.  The black runs on the "backside" are mildly diverting for accomplished skiers. My favorite place near home to ski


Pros: close to metro detroit, inexpensive, nice instructors, friendly hills for beginners

Cons: Busy on weekends and holidays,

My review is based on one season of skiing.  But I have gone out every weekend that I could this year.  My daughter and I both started this year and have been to two of the hills in the metro-Detroit area.  We like this one the best.  We also headed to Caberfae Peaks earlier this year.    Mt. Holly provides several lifts with lines that are not too long and nearly non-existent during the week.  We have enjoyed our several trips out this year.  The beginner area is large and great to learn on.  It is easy to access for two very novice skiers, especially when one is a young child.    Also worked well for my toddler daughter...
