The best the midwest has to offer

Posted

Pros: big mountain feel, lots of runs, most vertical in the midwest

Cons: often windy and cold which causes runs to become boilerplates, lacks steep challenging runs

It may not be the rockies, but it's the best you can find in Minnesota.  No other resort within reasonable driving distance even comes close.  It's about 3.5-4 hours drive from the Twin Cities.  The only thing that might be better is upper peninsula, but then you're talking 7-8 hours from the cities. Lutsen brings a big resort feel to the midwest with 4 mountains.  Moose mountain serves up to 900 ft of vertical.  Not very impressive compared with the Rockies, but it's still 3 times the vertical of any local hill.  Beginner skiers will find Ullr mountain a great place to start.  It offers a nice slow chair lift, and all the runs coming off are very gentle.  People looking for jumps and...

Very much like many eastern ski resorts.

Pros: Big with lots of various terrain to keep you busy.

Cons: Prices in there resturants.

Spread across four mountains it really brings that big ski area feel to the midwest. Think of an eastern ski resort with just a shorter vertical but enough vertical (1000ft) to have long winding runs. Lutsen is very remote. You're a good hour drive from anything more then a bar or two and a resturant. Which is good and bad. Plus with being so far north with its location it is not out of the ordinary they can go weeks with highs only in the single digits and days in a row with negative temps are not uncommon. Hardcore skier can live with it but a family skiing is another story. Not the resorts fault. Terrain........Has something for everyone. Good steeps, good tree runs, mogul runs,...

Still my favorite in the area

Pros: Biggest runs in the area, great views

Cons: No night sking, some runs can get crowded on Saturdays

This is our 3rd year, 5th trip to Lutsen. We normally ski at Spirit Mountain in Duluth as we live in Duluth. We feel very fortunate to have a solid hill in our back yard and Lutsen just up the road 90 minutes. I wish we  lived closer. To mix it up these last 2 years we've been testing out some of the other ski hills in the area, Michigan's UP, Wisconsin, as well as others in Minnesota. Shy of going out West this is the best we've found. The one complaint we have is that the lodging company will not book single night stays.  Fortunately we are close enough that we can drive up and back the same day, but it would be nice to be able take advantage of the live music at Papa...

Best Overall in Minnesota

Posted

Pros: Minnesota's largest , most vertical, and fun for free skiing.

Cons: The drive, I can fly to Denver for the cost of gas to and from the Twin Cities.

Great area, if you need a quick fix and can't fly somewhere truly remarkable, it's worth the drive up to Lutsen.   Biggest cons are the drive, and lack of other things to do nearby.

Best skiing in the Mid West

Posted

Pros: lots of terrain and variety - lots of snowmaking

Cons: some runs can be short

This is the second year that I have purchased a seasons pass.  I loved it so much the first year, I am ready to go again.    My kids are beginners, and there is pleanty of terrain for them.  I can still find some challenges there.  I usually make a trip out west each year, but you can find me at Lutsen every week end.  They make lots of snow in the fall so they guantee opening by Thanksgiving.  Pricing is very reasonable, there is a lot of accomadation (ski in/out) and a few restaurants right on site.  I drive down from Thunder Bay, Ontario.    Never any lift lines.

First Trip to Lutsen Was Very Good

Posted

Pros: Varied Terrain, Great Views

Cons: It's Still Not the Rockies!

We usually ski the Colorado resorts during spring break, but tried something closer to home (Michigan) this year. We skied 3 days at Lutsen and really enjoyed it. For a mid-western resort, it has an "out west" feel. The views are great and the runs are good.Mostly blue and black cruisers, but there are some glades and steepes.Even a gondola! It is worth a visit.
