Pros: Extreme Terrain, Powder, Vertical

Cons: Not much beginner terrain, Need to ski full vertical to get back to the top, Bad lift layout

With a 4,000 ft. vertical its no wonder Kicking Horse is renound for their expert terrain. Well, maybe not renound since so few people have heard of it. Ridge after ridge of extreme ski lines is the norm and being at the top of the gondola about to traverse CPR and then picking a line at the top, is a truly magnificent experience. I went to Kicking Horse during Christmas of 2016 hoping that me (a double black diamond skier in the east) would enjoy the powder that the resort had to offer and hopefully ski some diamonds. To my amazement I was able to ski the extreme terrain there without too much of an issue except the occasional cursing. If you live in the east and you can ski double black diamonds at almost any resort then going to Kicking Horse you can probably expect the same. Beginner skiers are fairly limited to few trails and no trails are groomed except the beginner ones, however, it is a paradise for expert skiers. A true paradise. It is now my new favorite resort in the world :). The base offered few restaurants to choose from but there were enough to make it feel like a resort even though during any time but Christmas it's a ghost town. Staying at the Paliser lodge the heat didn't work very well and only 1 or 2 of our 6 rooms keys worked. But overall these were minor difficulties that barely impacted the enojoyment of the skiing and our stay in Kicking Horse. Golden is honestly not a town that you could call "charming" either. But the attitude and vibe of the Kicking Horse area was something unmatched by many other ski resorts. Instead of focusing on lodging, amenities, and restaurants KHMR focuses on what matters, the skiing (and it does not disappoint at all!). The current lift layout could definitely use some improvements but due to the lack of skiers during the season there isn't too much they can do until they attract more tourists. Overall a great mountain that we definitely will be going back to!
