WHAT'S NEW
  • New for 2010-11...A New High Speed Morning Star Quad! We replaced the fixed grip quad with a new Doppelmayr CTEC Detachable Quad lift, our third high speed quad! The bottom terminal of the lift is located adjacent to the Eagle base terminal and the top of the new lift is approximately the same location as the old Morning Star top. Slopework was performed at the bottom of Morning Star and lower Cross cut to provide access to the bottom of the lift. Lights were installed on lower Foxfire to provide night access from the Cindy's area.

  • New for 2010-11...two new slopes! A new beginner slope called Bear Cub starts at top of the Wall slope and heads to the right, meaders down through the woods then joins back into the Wall just above the bridge. Gobbler's Glade was cut through the woods starting at Woodpecker and finishing on Fiddler's Elbow.

Holiday Valley
Description:

Just one hour from Buffalo and three hours from Toronto, Holiday Valley is one of the top resorts in the eastern US. The Valley's 52 trails are spread across 260 skiable acres and its 95% snowmaking coverage keeps the mountain white even when Mother Nature is a little short. Twelve lifts and an uphill capacity of 20,000 skiers per hour assure that little time will be spent waiting in line. The terrain is varied with beginners and intermediates benefiting the most while experts may yearn for more. The slopes don't close when the sun sets as Holiday Valley flicks the lights on for some excellent night skiing and riding.Three base lodges provide all the comforts and services you expect at a top resort, including a restaurant, cafeterias, lounges, ski school, ski rental and repair shops, day care and ski shops. Ellicottville is a very nice town with a number of restaurants, bars, shop and galleries.

Pros: Great package deals with the Inn, decent prices, not too crowded, varied terrain, the Village of Ellicottville

Cons: Depending on the weather, there can be a lot of ice

We have skied Holiday Valley several times in the past few years. It's always risky deciding when to plan a trip, as the weather is so variable here. That being said, when there is "decent" snow, this is a great place. It is frustrating when the crowd is smaller that not all lifts are running but that it is understandable. The trail maps at the top of the lifts could be improved upon and modernized a bit. We have gotten some GREAT package deals with the Inn at Holiday Valley. The people there are extremely friendly and it's a nice facility. The lift lines aren't terribly long, even at busy times, the crowds are nowhere near as rude as those at Seven Springs and the mountain is more interesting. The nightlife in the Village is a fun added touch and we are big fans of the Blueberry Ale at the Ellicottville Brewing Company after a fun day on the slopes. The new lodge at HV is incredible.....large enough that you can actually find a seat at lunch, and there are lots of other options available for eating/drinking. The locker area is large and comfortable, coffee shop is a nice place to sit and warm up and people-watch. All in all, HV is our favorite choice for "local" skiing (although it is still a 4 hour drive for us).

Pros: Varied runs up to lower advanced, good snow at times, reasonable night prices

Cons: Little challenging terrain, can be crowded

Holiday Valley is where I started skiing.  I went with my more capable family, fell down a lot, and somewhere along the line caught the bug that takes up so much of my time today.  For that, I'm eternally grateful.

Pros: For a mountain with a minimal vertical drop, Holiday Valley does its best to make the mountain feel bigger.  If you're an improving intermediate, you'll probably feel it has sufficient challenge to keep you on edge (or on your butt) on new slopes for most of your day.  The village of Ellicotteville is a nice place to relax pre-post skiing.

Cons: It's not a very big mountain and there isn't really terrain to challenge expert skiers.  Some of the areas meant for beginning skiers (green trails marked as slow zones for their length) become more challenging and nerve wracking for those beginners as they are not super wide and it forces a lot of not so great skiers into a bottleneck.

Pros: snow is usually great, lots and lots to do, nearby ellicottville is great,

Cons: terrain parks, not quite challenging enough

I ski holiday valley about 10 days/yr and love it.  By far the best ski resort in the east NY/ Midwest area.  Theres never a bad day at HV.  Nearby Ellicottville is awesome.  Great place to learn.  Overall great resort
