My favorite in the area


Pros: Scenery, conditions, terrain

Cons: midwest

Chestnut counts as home, I've skied here for a long time.  The area is one of the most scenic that I've enjoyed, with the Mississippi at the base.   The conditions are good due to extensive snowmaking and an ample water supply (did I mention the Mississippi at the base!)  The terrain has plenty to offer for a Midwest resort, the down side is that the runs are short.   Personally, I love Apache, it has a sweet double fall line most of the way down, which gives you ample room to play with gravity.      The newer developments are 2 new runs at the south end, Warpath has a nice steep pitch at the top, which is great when conditions are optimal. ...

One of the very best Ski resorts in the Midwest


Pros: Excellent range of difficulty in runs, good snow coverage, friendly staff

 Chestnut Mountain is one of my favorite resorts in the Midwest.  The only other resort in the region that can compete IMO is Granite Peak, which is several hours North in Wausau, Wisconsin. One of the things that stands out about Chestnut is the variety and difficulty of terrain offered.  There are several good beginner runs, most notably 'Old Main' which is a nice easy cruiser run for beginners that runs down the north end of the resort.  Intermediate runs have a nice range of difficulty from Moser & Fox that run down to one of the quad lifts and Crazy Horse, which while rated as a blue, but could easily be rated a black diamond by most Midwest standards.  The crown jewel of...
