Broken River (BR) is the only Ski Area in New Zealand to have a Tramway. The modified cable car that use to just lug gear from the car park to the lodges can now take passengers too cutting out a 30 minute hike. From the lodges it is still a 10-15 minute walk to the Access Tow. The Access Tow line can just be made out in the center of the photo below. Center left is the day lodge where you can relax, purchase food and drinks or make yourself a cheese toastie or cuppa tea.
Looking down Main Tow
Main Tow gives access to the BR basin, a wide open slope at the perfect angle for lots of fun.
BR Basin on a powder day
On this day I had time to finish off my own powder eights without anyone else destroying them.
From the top of Main Tow you can either hike up to the lookers left to ski Sunshine Face and the bowls on the other side of it. Or you can traverse to skiers left and pick up the Ridge Tow to access Allan's Basin.
Back Bowls off Sunny Peak, Main Tow is over to the right of this photo.
The Ridge Tow
This is a photo of the Ridge Tow which accesses Allan's Basin. On a powder day it can be a bottle neck but as you can see the queue isn't too bad.
Hamilton Peak and Allan's Basin
From the Ridge Tow you can ski down Allan's Basin, an epic run especially at the end of the day to get back to the car park. Or you can hike over Hamilton Peak to Craigieburn where your BR lift pass can be used.
From Allan's you can cut back over to the Day Lodge or Access Tow for an awesome loop.
